Post subject: How to make your eBook for free - tutorial
|
|
|
Hello all,
The last two days I have written an eBook on how to write an eBook (!).
The result is a free eBook downloadable from
http://www.databasedesign-resource.com/resources.html at the bottom of the page.
The reason for this was several emails from people who for some reason contacted me on the subject; some rather desperate. Instead of answering everyone, I wrote this eBook on how I use free tools to do it. This eBook is now accessible from my site - feel free to use it.
21 pages - 641 Kb - PDF file _________________ DatabaseDesigner

Very generous of you and a very productive way to answer questions.
Thanks!

Thank you, Debs!
From the response I've had on email, and the number of downloads that's been made, I understand that this has been a help to many people. Nothing is better. After all, maybe there is such thing as a free lunch
No, honestly, I see people struggling, and it's just nice to give them a hunch. _________________ DatabaseDesigner

Thanks, Larry;
Yes, that was what I too found out
No, seriously, it is actually so easy and cost-free to do that eBook stuff, so I thought you all should know.
Of course, I may accidentally have done damage to someone's business: I have seen many sites trying to capitalize on the subject. _________________ DatabaseDesigner

Alf,
I must admit I hesitated to download "another ebook about ebooks", but seeing the rave reviews you were getting, I did, and I'm impressed.
It's easy to over complicate these things and to concentrate on promotion rather than useful information, but I'm pleased to say you avoided both of these traps in style.
Excellent stuff.
All the best,
Charlie.
P.S. I have a few covers to do in the near future, and the software you are using looks just the job (rather than paying each time). _________________ "Before I speak, I have something important to say."

Maybe it's the exception that proves the rule.
Cheers,

Apologies, that this is a little off topic, but this is one of those topics that I never dared ask, and I have to ask it now (otherwise I might never!)
What is the point of an e-book? (This is a genuine question).
Why do people who write e-books choose that format rather than writing a website? Is it because it can be printed and read off-line more easily? Or is it something else? |

A lot of people write them to make money. Information after all is still one of the biggest products out there.
If I were doing it for free...I would probably do a website.
If I were doing it for money I would probably do an ebook with a registration that had to be entered to make it work.
I guess ease of viewing and the fact that most ebooks come as a single exe file makes them nice for viewing offline. And some of the ebook viewers out there make you feel like you are almost reading a book in your hand with bookmarks and such.
Plus many are free to give away to other people so just attaching an ebook to an email message is kind of common these days to.
And hey it is a fashion statement hehe you can say "READ MY EBOOK" instead of the old "VISIT MY WEBSITE" hehe
But there are probably a hundred other reasons that people do it.
I can also say that writing an Ebook with software designed for it can be much easier then designing a website if you have no knowledge of how to do that. Some of the ebook editors are just like using a word processing software like Microsoft Word.
Most people can figure out how to make an ebook with good software. But place them infront of Dreamweaver to design a website and you have information overload...self destruct in 10 seconds.... |

I wrote an ebook that isn't a book Actually I had devised a budgeting system and used Excel to set it up. The problem is ... a lot of people don't have Excel ... so I put the worksheets into pdf format so they could print them out easily and use them.
I offer it as a free download for my subscribers on my site. Offering this ebook has taken me from about 50 subscribers in October to approaching 400 now ... and that 100 subscribers took me 6 months to get!
If you can offer something unique ... a new twist on an old idea ... something that solves problems for people ... they are very willing to pay for it. I chose the free option on my ebook since my goal was to increase my subscriber base. I could have just as easily sold it instead.
Hope this helps,

You have a good questin there (and part answer too )
There are several reasons for producing an eBook instead of just putting it on pages in a website:
1) Making money on it (or giveaway as bonus, like Debs)
2) Readable offline
3) As Larry mentions; low competance level compared to making a website.
4) Using it to promote your site. One of my ebooks is published on several sites, both directly and as links to my site, and the traffic increase is pleasing.
But point 1 and 4 is the most important in my case.
The reason wy I wrote this eBook in the first place, is described in its Introduction chapter. _________________ DatabaseDesigner

| Many thanks all of you for helping me with that! It's been bothering me for about four years. Motives for writing an ebook are a little clearer to me now. |
