Post subject: couple of domain on one IP OK?
|
|
|
I got a host that offers more than one domain to be hosted with,
and one dedicated ip address,
I wonder if it is OK, to have 20 or more domain hosted under a same
IP address.
thanks. _________________ Top Online Business, Work at Home Resources, Start up |

Absolutely. But make sure you don't do a lot of interlinking of your own sites from domains on this one ip address to other domains on the same ip address. Good luck.

Can't remember the "reasonable" number exactly, and he probably only alluded to a number, but I do remember it is way more sites than I want to have to keep up with. |
I don't think that he stated some real numbers, but just think about it: there are countless companies selling "shared hosting" packages: this usually means a lot of customers on the same server.
Google can't allow to deprecate those people just because they are using a non-dedicated hosting!

I am not saying they do deprecate but they could deprecate if you are in what they consider a bad neighborhood, a host that has a lot of spammers.
They may not deprecate for this yet, but they could in the future. It is worth considering.
And although I said I hate 1and1 this possibility could even be a good reason to host with 1 and 1, because they are such a big company it seems to me they are unlikely to be deprecated. |

That's a bit paranoid in my opinion. Deprecating an ip would be an extreme measure triggered by desperation and that would have horrible consequences: spammers would probably switch ip (it can be done in a couple of days, changing hosting) and the "bad mojo" would probably remain on the clueless remaining people.
That's like using a machine gun to eradicate cockroaches from your kitchen: you're going to destroy the kitchen and miss the bugs.
I've heard that google and others are investing lots on "latent semantic indexing", an algorithmic way to separate true contents from spam. _________________ -> Gareth <-

Once again there is not definitive answer. Remember that Google tends to do things in an automated fashion. There is nothing to stop them from filtering sites that are shared with others who are known spammers. Why should Google care if they knock down a few "Good Guys". If you are a big company I'm sure they will listen and get you fixed. BMW Germany was right back up a few days later.
Like everything the best strategy is to diversify (Unless you are a cheater who is making bank by cheating - then you milk it and deal with the consequences later).
Why would Matt Cutts say there is ANY point where this is not a problem unless in fact they have this on their RADAR!
Email addresses get blocked by IP frequently, why not entire groups of sites? Who knows what will happen. There isn't always safety in numbers. _________________

You should be OK as there is nothing wrong with having more than one site hosted per domain.
However you may run into some type of problem if you have a lot of domains all linking to each other on the same IP. |

It is acceptable to have more than one domains under one unique IP. There are more domains than IPv4 addresses used for web hosting, I would guess.
The problem is, if you crosslink the domains too much, Google might not take those into account. Perhaps, it even will hurt your ranking if done too extensively.
Google know more than we imagine. For instance, even if you crosslink related sites, it may not do any good if the domain was registered under the same owner.
I know Google has this information, but don't have any data if they actually use it in ranking pages. _________________ I help small business owners overcome technology challenges in building their business online.
