1- I wonder how many different ways you could promot your blog?
2- does pinging and submit your blog to directories is the same thing?

You can promote your blog all the same ways your promote a "regular" website. After all, a blog is just a style of website.
Submitting your site to directories and pinging are different things. A ping just tells the server (such as pingomatic.com) that you have a new article to read. It does tell pingomatic anything else. No title of your article, no keywords, no content. Just that you have a new article up.

The best way to promote blogs so far is called Tag and Ping. I have purchased a copy of the package. It is $147 and is definitely worth it. So if you are a serious blogger I suggest you get it.
The basic principle is backlinking strategy through related content, blog directories and bookmarking services.

Just be sure that the content you use is good, and the blog offers valuable stuff to visitors.
This should ensure your continued success with this model.
If garbage is created just to use this technique, you stand the chance of getting booted out.

Hi ll,
A few main points for optimizing your blog for more traffic.
1. Make sure your whole blog is SEO worthy and optimized.
2. Have your blog listed in my msn and my yahoo.
3. Make sure you are pinging all the rss directories. (done automatically with wordpress)
4. You can either use something like tag & ping or if you are running a wordpress blog there are heaps of plugins that do the same thing at no cost.

5. Make sure you add your blog to as many rss & blog directories as possible.

if you submit your blog rss feed into rss directory using software, what happen if you submit it twice to the same directory?

Usually just comes up with "this feed has already been submitted to our directory" or something similar.

I found an excellent article on how to promote your blog, and I regularily apply some of these techniques with a good result.
Blog Traffic
I am not satisfied yet...
Here is a "secret" I found recently: Find the latest buzz and talk about it, then ping with pingoat, and if your article is good enough, go ahead and post it on social bookmarking site (never SPAM).
You will get a surge of traffic for a day or too, and some sales...

It is my own opinion to say weather Tag and Ping is the best or not. You dont have to agree with it if you dont want to. I have been able to get great results with this product.
Backlinks from bookmark services really helps increasing your website's position.
