Post subject: Commission Junction and AdWords

How does the Commission Junctionb affiliate code work in the context of AdWords, as, for example, used by Google Cash?
In other words, when using AdWords as an affiliate to promote a Commission Junction merchant, does all of the CJ link code, including the image and other references slot into the Adwords link? Does it need to?
I guess another question is, what is the minimum part of the CJ provided code required to connect everything, i.e. set the cookies, and associate the affiliate with the customer assuming the code looks like this:
<a href="http://www.qksrv.net/click-***-***" target="_top" >www.***.***</a><img src="http://www.qksrv.net/image-***-***" width="1" height="1" border="0">
Is only the "http://www.qksrv.net/click-***-***" required?
A related question is affiliate link cloaking? Can CJ links be cloaked?
Thanks! |

If you mean redirected by way of a shorter link, yes.
I'd go this route rather than risk playing around with the tracking link... as I don't know the answer to your main question.

I would really appreciate some pointers as to how this might be done, specifically doing a redirect on the whole block of CJ tracking code.
Clickbank is easy, because it is all part of a single URL, but the CJ code block of code includes images references, even for a text link, implying that an image impression might be included in the system somewhere.
Thanks very much indeed! |

As far as I understand it, the 1x1 pixel image is use to track impressions, not affiliate commissions, and could be left out without financial penalty.
Assuming you want to maintain impression tracking, one way around it is to set up a page that redirects to the href part of the CJ code, but also include a javascript function that accesses the image once the page loads (using onload in the body tag).
I learnt of this method in Leslie Rohde's Dynamic Linking (available with Michael Campbell's Revenge of the Mininet), but there may be other methods, too.
As always, when interfering with affiliate tracking, test it yourself to make sure everything is really working OK.
Hope this helps,

Thanks Charlie. I am not bothered about impressions, only click-thru's and of course sales so I can see what the convertion rate is.
So the basic "http://www.qksrv.net/click-***-***" would suffice? |

You need to test this yourself, to make sure, as I mentioned.
Set up a link that excludes the impression tracking image and click it a few times to see how your stats are affected. Ideally test a purchase, too. At the very least, keep a very close eye on things once you go live with this modification.
I'm not guaranteeing anything. If you choose to modify the links provided by CJ, you do so at your own risk. I'm just suggesting a method that I believe works, and that I would try in your situation.
All the best,
Charlie. _________________ "Before I speak, I have something important to say."

I'm curious about this too. I just got an affiliate Adwords ad disapproved, with the reason being that it had an "inaccurate display url". The display url was the url of the site I was promoting, with the destination url being the commission junction link code. I was careful to include "aff" at the end of the ad.
I sent an e-mail to them disputing this. The link had been working fine up till then, and was making a nice profit. Has anyone had any problems with this?
Thanks! |

Hi
When I did some links the first of working with adwords I received the same message as well. I just changed it to make sure everything was fine after that no problems.
