Post subject: Web log analyzer

Can anyone recommend a good, inexpensive, web log analyzer that does daily, weekly and monthly stats, and also tracks search engine activity?
WebTrends is too expensive, and others I have looked at seem incomplete in various ways. I looked for example at Mach5 FastStats, but it only does daily logs. I have also noticed that they all report different stats for exactly the same logfile!
Another problem is that most of these involve downloading the logfile for analysis; one that resides on the server and produces HTML reports would be better.
Thanks! |

I just looked at AWStats (I think I remember using them six years ago or more, ack) and it looks very complete, but ...
I'm in a virtual hosting situation where all domains are dumped into the same access log, and the log is gzipped daily. I could set up a crontab to mail the log to another server, and a crontab to try and separate out domains, but I was thinking it might be easier to use per-page javascript tracking like www.sitemeter.com uses. Only problem is, they don't give you access to search terms people used in search engines unless you upgrade to a paid account (one per domain).
Is there anyone who does give pretty good stats (including search terms) for free or cheap? _________________ - blake

AWStats will parse out your log from multiple virtual domains. You just have one CRON job per virtual domain... it builds its own set of logs for each virtual domain.
And AWStats provides the search terms for you. If there in your log... _________________ Eric D. Burdo

Thanks. I think I'm going to give them a try again. I started to install last night and lost heart when the config.pl referred to in the README turned out not to exist.
But this is a new day and a new cup of coffee and who knows what config.pls I might happen upon. _________________ - blake

You can also try webceo hitlens, the tracking module with the javascript added to pages you want tracked. It covers even e-com features and is complete, atleast for what i want. They are cheap too.
To your success,

One thing to be careful of. You don't always want to have to add code to every page to track stats... Just keep that in mind.
Sometimes that is something you want... sometimes it isn't. I know when I am creating a site, I do not want to have to add an img or javascript to every page I want tracked... it is to easy to forget and not add the code... thus no tracking.
A log analyzer (such as AWStats) doesn't require anything extra. I know there are several other good log analyzers out there as well... I just do not have any experience with them... _________________ Eric D. Burdo

I only have one log file for my domains, is there any way to have two separate reports generated?
Or is there something else I can use? _________________ Robert

Uhm... yes. That's what the parsing does. You create a config file for each domain, and it will parse out only those records that fit that domain. _________________ Eric D. Burdo
