Post subject: Anyone using phpbb - this type of message board
|
|
|
I'm considering a phpbb message board/forum on a website that is not related to affiliate programs. The AssociatePrograms.com Forum uses phpbb.
Is anyone here using this software? How difficult was it to set up and administer?

i use phpBB ... i think it is among the best and most stable forum that you can find. the development of phpBB has gone a long way and is been around for ages. and you can see that the development team is no children. they are good experienced programmers.
actually i have used it since phpBB 1.4 which is quite OK that time. but with phpBB 2 ... they have advanced in many ways with templates, private messaging, groupings, etc ...
installing phpBB is quite simple ... there's a web setup wizard script. you just need to follow the wizard.
if you know some php ... you can customize it to your needs. there's also the phpbbhacks.com where you can downloads hacks like adding a shoutbox, etc ...
i think phpBB is great. _________________ Iszuddin Ismail aka Kidino

From a poster's point of view, I very much like phpBB, and if I wanted to run my own forum I'd give it strong consideration.
However, I remember reading once how Allan said he regretted his decision, saying it was overly complicated to set up. I realise this is contary to the other views, but I suppose everyone is different.
Are these the same versions?
Hope this helps,
Charlie. _________________ "Before I speak, I have something important to say."

Strictly from a posters view: I like phpBB. Easy to use.
from a 2nd hand administrator... it is not overly complicated to setup.... but it does take more than just uploading some files... You have several steps to walk through... _________________ Eric D. Burdo

Compared to a lot of people, my computer/technical skills are somewhat limited. After readhing the information on the phpbb site, I decided not to use it at this time.
I had a project in mind where I was hoping to get a message board that wouldn't require a learning curve before getting it up and running. It reads as if I could get it in operation after some reading and learning, but it would take a bit more time than I'm ready to put into this project right now. Maybe I'll try it later - right now I need to devote the bulk of my time to other websites.
Thanks for the information,
Bobby |

My son and I set one up for my son's hobby. It was almost a no-brainer. The instructions for setup were easy to follow. The only thing we could not get to work was the "avatars".

Maybe I got the wrong impression from reading the info on the site.
On the other hand, one man's no-brainer is another man's daunting task.
Would you give me an idea of what skills you need to get it going?

What is "avatars"?
Thanks,

Bobby:
Avatars are small icons used by people to represent themselves. I don't think Allan has them enabled, but my son's friends like using them.
My memory says that we just needed to be able to set up a folder on our web site and use FTP to upload all the files. The rest was straight forward. There were a number of steps to follow, but, nothing real techie. (of course, your web server people need to assign a mySQL database for you)
Any other comments, especially from people who have done it very recently?

Bear in mind, message boards and forums are not without their problems.
You need quite a bit of traffic to sustain them. Most people lurk and won't post. A dead forum is worse than no forum at all, since it impacts badly on the credibility of the host.
Secondly, once things do get going, it takes much time to moderate a forum, and you might find you're the main answerer of questions. OK, with a message board, things might not be quite so bad, but the same principles apply to some extent.
All the best,
Charlie. _________________ "Before I speak, I have something important to say."

i think phpBB is easy unless ... YOU DON'T READ THE MANUAL. have any of you guys heard of this acronym ... RTFM! very famous among computer geeks and hackers.
anyway ... if there's anybody that has complication in installing phpBB, i'd be happy to help as a friend (depending on how busy i am ... and be nice).
OK ... just would like to share that. _________________ Iszuddin Ismail aka Kidino

I had to ask another regular poster what the initials stood for, but I recognised the full version...
Actually, judging by the questions on this forum regarding SBI, I suspect it's pretty common at Sitesell, too.
All the best,

I use it for my AffiliateManager.net forum, and I've been very happy with it.
I didn't personally install it myself, because I had some difficulty early on, and my host was kind enough to do it for me. _________________ Shawn Collins

PHPBB is great I have set it up numerous times...Snitz isn't bad if you are on ASP with SQL...
Invision I think is the biggest piece of junk on the planet...I have set that up numerous times to and it is always a hunk of junk...but I was just setting up what I was told hehe...
If you want me to set it up for you I will if you haven't got it up and running yet...it is very simple...just make sure you have PHP/MySQL
(Some people must realize also when they say it is a no brainer...that not all hosting services let PHP scripts create databases. Sumtimes you must create them yourself and use an SQL file to create the tables. In these cases I can see where it would be very tough for someone unfamiliar with it.) |
