(Posted this in the wrong forum, hope this is more appropriate lol)
Hello everyone, just starting out on the whole affiliate thing and looking forward to getting to grips with everything.
A 'concerned' webmaster of a huge site offerred me some 'kind advice' the other day, warning me that the days of making money as an affiliate are over and not to put too much effort into it, whereas I think they are still starting? ....what do you guys say to that?

There's massive potential, especially if you're prepared to put in the time and effort to create genuinely useful websites and do things which make you stand out from the crowd. _________________ Allan Gardyne

Hi Adele,
I'd say: "And are you taking his/her bait?..."
Google and others may indeed be intent on squashing what they consider as spammy 'thin' affiliate sites.
But we "thickos" know on the Internet "a customer is born every minute".
Welcome aboard!

well that's good to hear
and no, i'm not taking the bait because it seems to me that, done right and with effort as you have said, there IS great potential. Maybe if these people saw 'being an affiliate' in a similar way to 'being a agent' or sales rep they might see it differently?
Good point about quality control though - I guess there are way too many 'thin' affiliates out there masking the good ones, and then the good ones aren't believed cos the majority of think affs don't get anywhere.
Personally I think this is the way forward, and don't see why it can't become a 'career' option, if you like! |

| The sad thing is, the site in question would be perfect for an affiliate programme - but the owner just will not entertain the idea |

There are so many ways to make money doing affiliate marketing. A lot of the time, SEO and PPC are the only outlets a lot of people think about. And even with those 2, there are still HUGE potential to make a generous amount of money as an affiliate.
Allan did a recent newsletter showcasing a guy who pulled in a million dollars, and he pretty much just started. You can read it here: http://www.associateprograms.com/search/newsletter284.shtml
That's just one example. From time to time, I'll run across forums and blogs where people who have just started post earnings statements and check snapshots to prove there is still money to be made.

I would definitely agree with Allan. The web site must offer the viewer something of substance that s/he needs or wants. A "twist" to your offers....something no one else does....can also increase your income dramatically.

I would say getting targeted traffic to your site is the key to being profitable as an affiliate. There are other things to work on, but most of your time will be spent getting targeted traffic to your site.

Bah. Never listen to nay-sayers. As with anything, you will either fail or succeed. There is no middle ground. So, if you are willing to put forth the effort and have some good business sense and the work ethic of a mad-man, you can actually do well.
I look at affiliate marketting as any business. Most will fail, but those that don't will enjoy a nice income. Not everyone is cut out for this, just like not everyone can be a pro athelete or musician. As an individual you know what you're capable of. Just keep at it and don't let discouraging words bring you down. _________________ Avalon

I would be interested in knowing why they made that comment. I am sure that there were probably some valid issues he was thinking of that we could learn from and at the same time some reasons to believe that we have every reason to keep building our businesses.
Just interested but I would agree with what has already been said. Some are meant to succeed in this. This is made for some. _________________ Resources for Affiliate Marketers

Yes, it is true that the latest search engine formula change from Yahoo and Google has somehow wiped out lots of affiliate related content from their engine.
This is because of a few bad affiliates doing bad marketing technique such as duplicating content and tremendous spams. As usual a few bad apples always ruin something good.
But overall the industry is strong and this is a good time to start / re-start / refresh affiliate web sites with new and better content.
No, I do not believe at the slightest bit it will erase the affiliate marketing community of the map. No way. In fact I heard rumors Google is going into the CPA world.
Just my thoughts. _________________ Andrew Nurcahya

As I've learned, the process to eventually making money on the Net begins with a rich content site that over-delivers. A site that provides a solution to your visitors problem. If you have the answer he seeks, you're golden in his eyes.
That content that is keyword-rich and targeted, drives the traffic, both human and spider. They both will love you up if you provide what they want. The SE's don't like being manipulated like the so-called SEO guru's sweat day in and day out to do. They simply want reality, which is CONTENT.
The traffic gives you the opportunity to PRE-sell. Give your site a voice....your voice. If you can have a conversation with someone, you can PRE-sell. If you have grade 7 writing skills, you can PRE-sell. Make sure they know that you can be trusted and relied upon to over-deliver what they are looking for. Make them like you. Have fun with them. Put your own style and sense of humor into your writing. Sell yourself. Forget all the fancy writing skills you learned in college.
The over-delivered content and personal voice sets them into an open-mindset to provide you your most wanted response....a click on whatever monetizing you've set up, whether it is Adsense, an affiliate, an e-store product or whatever. Just make sure that your monetization models provide them a service. Don't think of the money and the money will come. Don't give them information on the technique of achieving that perfect golf score and have an affiliate link to Circuit City. Make sure there is a perfect fit.
Love your guest and they'll turn into a customer.
Such is the madness I have learned and applied and, best of all, IT WORKS! _________________ If you've seen through GRQ and can't grow with SEO, try SBI! |

I read somewhere recently that affiliates are set to earn 6.5 billion dollars in 2006, I can't remember where exactly it was some email that I read regularly (of the many!).
I think the point is that the engines and those who are innovating the direction of the web are actively cutting out the loophole abusers. I think it's great- I'm very excited about web 2.0 and I'm glad that the trashy site/spammers are being phased out.
Imagine if they could actually phase out spam..
As long as you work with the algorithms and focus on adding value to the web you'll be fine. There will be always be merchant partners who will need the traffic you send them.
Long live Web 2.0 and 3.0 and so on and so forth.
