From what I see writing articles can drive traffic to your site, but how long until use usally start seeing results?

It all depends on how many places you get your article published and how many people actually read them. Don';t forget, submitting and articles doesn't mean it will be published. I've been doing the article thing for a while and get minimal traffic from them. I do it mainly for the one-way links.

Well I have only been submitting articles for a little while now and a couple hours after I submitted my first one, I got a number of downloads. And I think that was pretty good. The more people get my articles, the more links I will have coming back to me right?

Yeah, the more places you can drop your article the more links you'll be getting. Again, it all depends if they're published as not every site you submit to will publish your articles. Still, if you get X number of articles published each month it will give you X number of links. Also, increased exposure for your site is always a good thing!
