Post subject: High Earnings Per Click on Sunday 12/14/03

If your EPC was extraordinarily high on 12/14 as mine was (1.5x normal), there's a reason for it. While the AdSense publisher interface was down for several hours that day, the AdWords advertiser interface was as well.
While the AdWords component was down, Google's system was unable to control daily advertiser spending limits. This caused high paying ads to be served disproportionately high to how the system is set up to work because those ads' spending limits were not being recognized.
There are controls in place on the AdWords side that if the daily spend reaches greater than 20% higher than it is set to by the advertiser, Google refunds the overage to the advertiser.
AdSense publishers benefited from this because while we reaped the higher EPC, Google took a loss on some of that by having to refund the advertiser for the amount billed to their account that was in excess of 20% of their daily spend limit. One AdWords advertiser reported that she was initially charged 14 times her daily limit, before Google corrected it.
So Google gave some AdSense publishers a little Xmas present on Sunday by paying us a higher EPC in some cases. |

I envy those publishers that got that bonus as Sunday is not my best day ... and this last week was one of the worst ever! Ah well, fickle internet ... things have improved this week so I can't complain
