| Posting in very active forums are also a great way to get word-of-mouth advertising from forum members to other people. |

When I started my first website, I posted in niche forums to get targeted traffic to my website as well as create backlinks to it. Aside from submitting to directories (for the backlinks/PR), posting in forums is a fine way to boost your PR and generate traffic; however, it is best for beginning webmasters.
Once your website gets out of the "sandbox" (which could be upon the first PR update if you create enough backlinks to your site), though, it's best to build backlinks by contacting webmasters directly. Of course, you could post in forums to get link partners, but doing so is more of a one-time post rather than participating in discussions or contributing frequently, as you did as a beginner.

I just found that free ebook on Forum Marketing. I think it's pretty good.

I have very few clicks on my signature (now at 31 posts and few in other forums), since I tracked since 2 days not 1 click! But I made one sale a week ago  - probably luck *g*
So I think it's not very effective to get free traffic fast, for beginning a business. And it's consuming too much time of my for that. Better as a long term strategy.
I think I will go for other strategies first now.

Forum posting is good to bring some traffic to your site but not good enough. You must combine this method with other strategies like article posting link exchanging and so on.
