My site after one month on the net went from Alexa ranking of 1.2 million to 428K to 262K to today 198K, I am very happy that I am gaining in ranking in Alexa, however, I am puzzled at how/why the ranking improved?

Another question is that my site just got indexed by google, and my page rank is 2/10, very poor, how do I increase my page ranking? I have used Martell's keywords placement technique precisely so it is not a case of not enough keywords or density issue, well, I hope not.

Thanks

Alexa ranking is meaningless. It's supposed to be an indicator of the amount of traffic you receive but it just indicates how many times people who have installed their toolbar (a very small number when compared with the number of people who actually use the internet) have visited your site..

You can improve the Alexa ranking of any site just by installing their spyware-loaded toolbar yourself and setting the site as your home page.

The only way to get an accurate read on your traffic is to read your web stats.

Page rank is a logarithmic scale and reflects the number of inbound links you have coming from pages of PR4 and above.

I'm happy to see any page I'm responsible for get PR4 or above. On the other hand, I don't fret if it's lower. Pages with PR0 - 3 frequently rank on page 1 in the SERPs.

Don't get hung up on it. It probably accounts for less than 1% of your actual rank in the SERPs.

You're welcome Smile

I still say concentrate on your content, keywords and internal and inbound links as far as search engines are concerned.

Most of all, though, make your site attractive to your visitors; coherent, informative and user-friendly.

Hi Uche, I was using ppc se without much success. I now use a 3rd party traffic (contextual) selling campaigns and is seeing better results but the click through and conversion rates are low since the campaign is cheap and therefore not very targetted traffic. I can't afford to pay up for marketing campaigns. I currently get about 500-700 visitors/day and will sign up for another 3rd party campaign which will pull in about 1000 visitors/per to the site.

I have made 6 affiliate sales in the past 4 weeks since the inception of the site and have also made $$ from adsense. I am new at this so I don't know how my progress is compared to others, maybe you could shed some light.

Enterprise, I have linked many sites to my site, but have not been able to get them to link to me, since my site is relatively new and rank low on google page ranking, any suggestions on how to get more sites to link to my site?

Thanks much

Creditloan,

It seems to me that your marketing is doing really and that perhaps is why you noticed an improved ranking in Alexa.

6 affiliate sales in 4 weeks is very good for a newbie, especially if it is residual income. Newbies are advised to aim for 1 or 2 sales per month initially, so I think you are doing quite well. If you can sustain that conversion rate over 12 - 24 months then you could well create a nice money making downline for yourself.

I suggest you don't focus to much on buying traffic because these people will see your site once and if it does not capture their attention they will move on to the next site. It is better to use an autoresponder and leads purchased from a reputable company. You'll be able to market to them over and over again which will result in increased conversation rates.

Make sure any leads you buy are indeed opt-in leads that have requested for the type of info/products you are offering otherwise the response rate will be poor and you could be accused of SPAM.

Newsletters are another great way to market your products. You provide your subscribers with useful info but also plug in your product strategically within the newsletter.

Persistence. Just keep trying. Make sure you're in DMOZ to help with PR(make sure the category you submit to has an editor if possible). Try to build an internal link structure (links within your text to other pages on your site using keyphrases as anchor text).

I'd also pay for inclusion in Joe Ant and possibly Inktomi, Gimpsy too if your site is interactive.

How about driving PPCs to a "sales page" for your ezine or autoresponder series? Might be able to combine the best of both words.

Just a thought,
Charlie.

Thanks much Uche, Enterprise and Charlie for your valuable inputs, I have gotten so much from this forum and your help have been invaluable to me being a newbie, I really appreciate it.

Where can I find more info regarding autoresponder? I don't really know what it does?

Thanks

Hi,

Autoresponder are used to store a list of subscribers and a series of messages which are sent to the subscribers at the intervals you set.

If you have ever subscribed to a newsletter or requested more information on a product or service and received an instant reply then the message was probably sent by an autoresponder.

I use GetResponse which is one of the best. You can read more about it here - http://www.getresponse.com/index/60532

Everyone has their favourite autoresponder - third party service or own server software.

Third party service is the easiest and safest.

Aweber.com is long established and very highly regarded.

Hope this helps,
Charlie.

And please, please, please stay away from those that take your subscriber list and use it themselves! I can't tell you how many spam emails I get because I signed up for a newsletter through a site using a remotely hosted service for free and find my email on tons of lists I never signed up for!

Aweber is definitely a great service IMO.
