|
|
Allan has this great new board and it's good to see things picking up here. But in reading new posts for the past few days, it seems there are more and more posts where someone tries to think of something to say in a thread just to be able to plug his/her site or product.
I hope this board doesn't degenerate into a collection of mostly thinly disguised advertisements. It will become of limited value like many other forums where personal promotions are in abundance.
Allan, if you're listening (reading) and if my vote counts for anything, I vote for not allowing self-promotions except maybe for a 2-line discreet signature - or even better - limiting such things to the self-promotion section of this forum only. I think I've seen you on the I-Sales list and as you know, there is an ongoing discussion there about this sort of thing.
I would much rather have fewer posts than have to wade through 10 times as many posts to find the ones that are providing good information.
There are 2 particular message forums where I go on almost a daily basis. One of them I have visited almost daily for 5 years. By far, I have learned more (and provided assistance to others) on these 2 boards than all the others combined. Neither of those 2 forums allow self-promotion.
With 20,000 plus subscribers to your newsletter, I would think some promotion of this forum in the newsletter would generate enough interest to have good dicussions by people willing to post without advertising.
I know some people will probably respond and say they won't participate if they can't plug their own sites and products. My rhetorical question is whether the forum isn't better off without those people in the long run?
Thanks for allowing me a place to offer my opinion,
Bobby

Allan,
I just realized the previous post should have been on the "About This Board" thread. Can you move it?
Thanks,
Bobby |

Bobby, I think the "Complaints" section is ideal for your post. Many more people are likely to read it if it stays here.
Thanks very much for taking the time to make that post.
I'm listening.
I'd love to hear what other people think about Bobby's comment.

There is no reason why people have to supply a url when asking a general question. I agree with you and I can name about 5 people (one or 2 in particular) who are seriously pissing me off with their outlandish advertising. _________________ http://www.fastfinancialfreedom.org - financial freedom is a myth (check out my brother's site)

I also agree. And also I vote for No guest posts. It takes 2 seconds to Register. Also may cut down on spam, and flame wars. _________________ Strive for the best, but prepare for the worst. |

i totally agree with the view that self promotion should not be allowed but ill also suggest that that only those registered to the fourm should be allowed to make a post though every 1 should be allowed to read it .this will give the fourm the feeling of a gradually expanding family with no strangers & moreover it some times becomes really difficult to trust the words of a starnger. |

The only problem I see with the registering is that some people will not do it.
Is this ok to lose those potential regulars?
The only time I won't register is if I am only visiting once or twice, have something to say, but don't really plan on being back... if I am going to be a regular, I always register...
Controlling promotional links is tricky... sometimes what someone is showing does not appear as an affiliate link, yet it is. And sometimes, people have legitimate information on their own site, but it appears to be promoting when they suggest people go read it... _________________ Eric D. Burdo

You guys have hit the nail in the head. We have quite a number of apparently genuine replies that refer to a link or two and it is impossible without a lot of checking to know whether it's promotion in disguise. Feel free to advise me if you find any.
Generally, the URL's should only be in the signature file - and then only once, please!! You don't have to use all 300 characters allowed. And yes, only registered users can create a signature file in their profiles. Guests have freedom to ask questions and reply to any topic.
Please detail your advice and don't just throw links around without clear descriptions of what they offer. You risk losing your message if you do.
Enjoy the valuable advice freely available here.

as far as allowing guest posts, and complaining about guests... I think we lose some points of view, can become too much an ivory tower without the guest post. ALso, sometimes you can think you logged in and then post only to find out you did it as guest. I have an always on DSL connection and I guess the log-out times out on me without notice or something...it's happened a few times.
