i have seen lot of sites offering free articles. So if articles would be free there would be thousands of affiliates using same on there website . hense lot of duplicate contents . ?

If you're referring to article directories, yes that content could be listed 1000's of times on different websites. You normally can't change anything within the articles so you do leave yourself open to SE penalties for duplicate content.
If you're referring to free PLR articles or ebooks, then the answer is to make slight changes to the content to make it unique and different. There are many article rewriters available or you can just use MS Word to do it. _________________ Jason

I'm not sure how well "slight" is going to work longterm. Many people believe that duplicate content filtering is moving more towards who and why as much as what. Even if it doesn't, pattern matching is becoming ever more sophisticated.
I still favour "substantial rewrite" if you're looking to the future.
