Hi There!
Here is my new site. http://www.u2-make-money-online-at-home.com . I used a basic xsite pro template. Any feedback, positive or negative, will be appreciated.

I went online last month ( Feb) and haven't made any money as yet and I'm getting a little discouraged. I realize that the topic is extremely competitive and now I'm wondering if I made a mistake and should begin a new site..What do you all think?

You are in a tremendously competitive environment where many are trying to do the same exact thing as you. With very little variation. You probably won't make too much money from this website to begin with. Many people would tell you, "one of the most critical errors is making a website about how to make money online... something they are in the process of attempting."

That being said, I think you've done yourself a great service. The website looks very nice. Your content could use a little cleaning up. But, mostly, you'll be able to take this experience and put it toward a less competitive niche subject where you can make a bigger impact.

While you're learning new techniques and skills from this new website, you can incorporate these into articles teaching lessons for this website. I think it could be a powerful combination.

You are off to a great start. Keep up the good work.

Your site looks better than many I've seen.

The problem with u2-make-money-online-at-home.com is that there are not only many thousands of sites like it already, but there are also many thousands of sites on the same topic which are much better than it.

Why would a beginner volunteer to compete with some of the smartest marketing minds on the planet?

Before you create a site, you have to ask yourself how your visitors are going to find you. There are hundreds of possible ways, but basically the two main sources most people use are search engines and advertising.

Because you're a beginner in a very tough field, your visitor-to-sales ratio (conversion rate) will inevitably be so low that advertising would prove to be too expensive. For most of your keywords, you'd have to pay more than $1 per click. That's $1,000 for every 1,000 visitors. You'd spend a LOT more than you'd earn in commissions. You might earn $2 to $5 per 1,000 visitors - if you're lucky.

This leaves you with traffic from free search engines, and you're trying to get it in probably the toughest possible niche online. To get traffic to a website, you MUST get links to the site from sites in your industry, preferably from high quality sites which have lots of sites linking to them.

Search engines look at the sites linking to you to see which community you belong to.

Which sites will be willing to link to you? Let's face it, more than likely the only sites which will be willing to link to you will be struggling low-traffic sites similar to yours.

Also, another problem you face is that you're telling people how to make money online but you don't have first-hand knowledge of making money online. Some people try to "fake it until they make it" but they fail because what they're doing is so obvious to most people.

Once you have some experience in marketing, that would be the time to consider building a site on the make money online topic. Then you could write first-hand case studies and describe successful marketing experiments you've done, and write honestly about how a certain book or product had helped you.

In the meanwhile, I strongly urge you to find a less competitive niche.

Additional thought...

You appear to thinking about your task as selling products. Here's what I suggest. Try changing your focus and think about your new career as helping people, or helping them make good buying decisions. Works for me.

[Edited to fix typos.]

Alan,
I just saw your response. I am so excited and honored ( believe it or not ) that you responded to my post. Thank you! I read your reply several times and you make some good points. I hadn't thought about what the cost of advertising could be for such a topic. I was just focusing on free searches. With that alone, I can see how the situation can look dismal.
I am actually now extremely excited at going through the whole process again with another less competitive field. There are a few things that I would do differently ( for example, choosing a hosting company with 24x7 support..my site was down most of today due to hardware failure and also, I already see that I could have gotten more for my money with regards to hosting )
Thanks again! I will keep trying! I have actually been studying affiliate marketing for quite a few years on and off but only recently created a web site. I find affiliate marketing so very interesting.
