Post subject: Woo-Hoo! Accepted by AdSense!

| My family and friends can't imagine why this is anything to be excited about, so I just wanted to share the moment with other people who understand . . . today I got my "congratulations, you're accepted" e-mail from Google AdSense! I just spent about 45 minutes pasting Google's code into over 20 web pages. |

I share your joy - I got accepted a couple of days ago too!
FWIW, it only took me about 30 minutes paste the Adsense code into several hundred pages and upload them. The software I use, CityDesk (www.fogcreek.com), is a fantastic product for building affiliate web sites. |

WTG both of you Now be sure and read the Terms of Service and FAQ thoroughly so you don't get dumped because you didn't know what was in them.
I know this forum hasn't had much on it about publishers who lost their right to publish Adsense ads, and the income they had already earned, but it does happen. Google is quite adamant about compliance and doesn't accept excuses.

Congratulations Jewel.
Are you getting good ads yet?
If you're like me (and a lot of other people I suspect), you'll wear out your keyboard the first few days from logging in to check on your clicks and earnings.

Thanks, all! Guest, congrats to you too! And thanks for telling me about CityDesk--I'll check into it this morning.
Debs, thank you for the heads up. I've gone over both sets of rules, but I'm going to go thru them again with a finetooth comb today to be sure that now that I've got my ads up, I'm not violating any touchy areas.
And Bobby, I do have some great ads already, except on one page--I'll have to do some adjusting on the keywords or something to get the ads to be pertinent to the info on that page.
Last night I actually earned some small change while I slept, from a couple of clicks that came less than 8 hours after putting in the ads!
And I'm only checking my earnings every hour this morning. |

Jewel,
I tried to see your site but it's not in your profile.
I will apply myself, after building more content.
But here's my question:
Can Adsense links be opened in a new window? I looked at Debs (are you there?) site, and when I clicked on ads, they opened in her window. I would like to have a new window opened. Is that possible, or are there some rules here? _________________ DatabaseDesigner

My site is http://www.home-jewelry-business-success-tips.com. Thanks for asking, and please be brutally frank if you see anything that could be improved! I can take it.
A few of my pages have ads that are jewelry related but not quite relevant to my page topic (even though my research shows there's a good supply of ads for my page topics), although I've noticed that every few days some of my pages have a definite shift in ad content even if I don't make any changes to the pages.
On the pages with shifting ad content, the ads tend to stay jewelry related, although sometimes they shift to ads for jewelry to buy, which is totally not what my audience wants to purchase--my readers are jewelry artists who are trying to sell their own jewelry creations! Although I suppose they may click on those ads just to check out what and how the competition is selling, and then I'd still make some money on the ads. That's not the click those advertisers want, though!
I do have one page, Jewelry Cases, that still shows just PSA's, even after several days. It hasn't been officially spidered by Google yet, so maybe if I just keep waiting I'll get real ads on that page. Most of my other ad pages got fairly relevant ads within an hour or so, even without being spidered.
And two of the pages I complained about in another post did finally get the ads I was trying for, just out of the blue several days after I published the pages. Woo hoo!
I'd like my ads to pop up in a new window, but to do that I'd have to add the target="blank" to the ad code, and Google is very fussy about not having an iota of the code altered. |

Forgot to mention that I know I need to update my site map but ran out of time yesterday.
Also that I finally decided how to show both tier 2 and tier 3 pages on my left-side navbar (which is not really allowed by SBI)--I just used caps for tier 2 pages and U/L case for tier 3. Not the best solution, but at least I can show all my pages without having them all look like the same level. |

Interesting idea on using Caps vs. lower case to section your navbar. Couple things to keep in mind, however:
1. that many choices can confuse your visitors thereby making them afraid to make a choice ... and leave;
2. that many navigation images really slows down your page loading time, check out the threads on here recently about this
Adsense, btw, cannot be set to open in a new window until Google sets it up. If you set it to open in new window, all you would get is the iframe adverts, with no text to target the ads to.
On your jewelry cases page I would suggest you put "display cases" "jewelry display cases" and "jewelry display" in and around where you inserted the Adsense code to see if that improves the targeting.

Debs, thanks so much for bringing up those points. I didn't realize about the slowness, and I can see that my navbar can be a little terrifying at this size . . . and I still have at least 50 more page ideas to add!
I think I'll follow your suggestion and try having the tier 3's only visible from the tier 2's. The reason I've tried to avoid that is because they have some of my best adsense keywords so I hate to make those pages hard to find. I know the more clicks the visitor has to make to get to a page, the less likely they are to travel to that page.
But I guess I can try it, and keep an eye on the traffic to those pages. If the traffic and adsense income drop significantly, I can put them back on the navbar or rearrange somehow. Also, I'll be getting my newsletter going at the first of the year, and I can link some of my newsletter articles to these less visible tier 3's.
Thanks also for the help with my jewelry cases page. I'll give that a try and see what my ads do!
You're a gem, Debs! |

Jewel,
Congrats with a very nice site! calming colors, nice fonts.. It really was a nice experience, and it certainly signals that you KNOW your business! Actually, I'll give you my very first opinion when I entered: Oh, here's someone who knows the business! So I had to take a look around for a while.
(bear in mind, though; I seldom buy jewelry, it always gets me into trouble. I always remember my mother's saying: Chasing women has never hurt anyone, it's when you catch them that the trouble starts....)
I was impressed (but a little bit confused) on the large number of buttons in the navbar, until you revealed that you have your 3-tier set there also. Consider that decicion once more, as you have so much content anyway.
Debs has a definitive point here (hasn't she always ). Two things I missed: A 'Contact Me/Us' button, and a 'Newsletter' button. If you have them, I failed to find them, and that's the same as you don't have them.
Otherwise, a great place you have made! Best of luck, _________________ DatabaseDesigner

Jewel, you can keep all the pages on your site within 2 clicks of the home page by using your sitemap(s) effectively.
I would recommend structuring several pages to be category sitemaps (this keeps the links manageable for viewers and SE's). Take a look at my site to see what I mean. My top navigation is strictly sitemap pages
Make sure your sitemap pages are in your navbar for your visitors, and that will help them a lot too.
I agree with Db Designer that you need to have a contact us/feedback page. A newsletter is a great idea to maintain contact with your visitors, get information from them as to what they want to see on your site, and to answers questions you can turn into more pages later!

Debs has great points here, jewel!
Actually, when i designed my 'Contact Us' page, I all of a sudden realized that I could use it for building content, like Debs hint at: I invite professionals to submit articles to me and in return I will link to their pages (they should of course be linking to me too), and I invite them to publish an eBook from my site (II will be offering something in the line of 60% commission on such a deal).
Otherwise, I think your conclusion to compress your navbar a little is smart. _________________ DatabaseDesigner
