I'm currently using a free blog for my "hobby" site. It's good to play around with. I have over ten other sites that are professionally hosted. If you're serious about what you want to pursue, I would get paid for hosting. It's pretty cheap these days. You could search around this forum, or check out my site as well.
If you aren't too serious about starting a business, a free blog would be worth considering. I've seen people make money on free blogs nowadays more than regular free hosting. _________________ Charles Amith

Hi chuck,
Few years ago I started my first web site on a free server. I made a little bit of money. Then I made couple of more and my third one became a BIG money maker for me and still is taking in around 20% of my income.
THE PROBLEM!
I'm stuck with this site on a free server and now they're posting adds on it. I don't want to take the risk of moving it and the free server doesn't want to make permanent movement even if I'm ready to pay for them hosting a new site.
I wish now that I'd bought a domain for this site so it would be mine and not the free hosts to control.
My small tip,

The first website I ever built, in 1996, was a free-hosted site, using server space provided by my ISP.
Last year I wrote to AdSense and asked if it was OK if I put AdSense ads on a free-hosted site. Judging by the reply I received, the AdSense employee didn't understand the question.
I went ahead and put AdSense ads on the site.
It's a well established site, with lots of old links to it from well established sites and it ranks very well in Google, but was kicked out of Yahoo's directory years ago.
It produces a few hundred dollars a month in AdSense revenue, so it IS possible.
Although this route IS possible, I definitely do NOT advise it. You can buy a domain name for less than $10 and buy cheap hosting. I'd much rather have my own memorable domain name than the impossible-to-remember name I have.
A "free" website can end up being very expensive because of lost opportunities. _________________ Allan Gardyne

I also did my initial learning on a couple of free hosts and I think it worked out fine. You probably would want to move your site as soon as it starts producing money so you don't end up stuck like one of the other posters said.
It's a good way to experiment and dabble around with things before committing any actual funds to it. I know hosting is cheap, but it still feels like a waste of $5 a month if you're stuck learning HTML, SEO, and all the other stuff you need to be successful at this. _________________ Roof Tile | State Tax Forms | Peewee Football |

| As a newbie I appreciate all the replies. I will try to get something going on a free site, and hey, if it can make me $100 a month, I would be pleased. I think I will eventually graduate to a SBI site. I guess there's a lot to learn, but well worth it. To Allen G. , and all the others in the forum, thanks again, and much success to all of you. |

Freeservers.com has a good deal going on right now. For details see the thread I started a day ago in the web hosting section.
Cheers,

If you're still in doubt, ask AdSense. _________________ Allan Gardyne
