I just ran into an interesting dilemma. I am not sure what steps to take yet. About a week ago, I started receiving sign ups for several affiliate programs, addressed to Blake Phillips, Blake, or Mr. Phillips.
There is no one in my business with that name. In fact, I don?t even know a Blake Phillips.
I sent an email to every affiliate manager stating this fact and asked the accounts to be closed because he was misrepresenting himself, he didn?t belong to my company, and I didn?t sign up for their affiliate program.
No one responded so I thought it was spam. That was approximately 15 affiliate companies ago.
Then I finally got a reply. There was someone named Blake Phillips signing up under my business name and email address. He asked for all checks to be mailed to a PO Box in Sacramento, California and he gave a social security number.
I asked if I could get the contact information. I was given an address and a phone number. The phone number is bogus. I received the following message when I tried to dial ?phone number cannot be completed as dialed. 2-D-K.?
Then today, I received another email welcoming Blake to the yet another affiliate program. I tried to use the access code to get into the account to see who this person was before I sent my reply this time. Guess what? The password has already been changed, I cannot access it.
I once again sent a reply to close the account.
I am now trying to post messages on affiliate forums in hope that someone can help me solve this problem and to make affiliate managers aware of this dilemma.
Any ideas how I can stop this from happening? How I can catch this guy and what legal actions to take?

If he's looking to collect money from these programs and is using a P.O. box for mail to collect cheques, then you've probably got a connection to him that could be traced. I'd consult the police and give them all the information you've posted here.
Identity theft is becoming quite common, unfortunately. I had someone using an email address of mine for joining various Yahoo groups. I finally just shut down that address and Yahoo ID. If this is your business address, that makes it harder to do. But at least this way you know what he's up to and you have info to share with the police.
Good luck!
