Post subject: Frustration: good advertiser, but inappropriate ad
|
|
|
Today as I was browsing one of my sites, I noticed an AdSense ad that immediately got my attention... in a bad way. My site is "named" AbsoluteCross, and while the site is not at all about religious matters (it's in fact entirely a resource for website/graphic designers) I do at the same time try to uphold relatively strict standards in what links/ads I run on the site. Today I saw the following ad:
Adult Web Hosting
3 Data Centers - 2000Mbit Network Tier-1 provider - We Know Adult!
Now of course I could (and probably will have to) block the offending ad from showing on my site... though unfortunately, the advertiser in question is a well-known webhosting company, www.cihost.com ... I couldn't even find on their site any indication that they were hoping to acquire adult-hosting clients.... yet that is who they are advertising to with AdSense.
Anyhow, its just unfortunate that I'll be losing potential AdSense revenue not because the advertiser itself is inappropriate (in fact it's a targetted match with my visitors), but rather because they chose such inappropriate advertising text which us AdSense affiliates have no degree of control over.
Oh well :-p
Peace. _________________ -- Dave

| When you see an inappropriate ad like that, you can click on the Ads by Google text which will take you to a screen where you can provide feedback on the ad. |

Hey, that was cool!
I always thought the "Ads by Google" was just free advertising for Google!
In this case you might rather want to contact the advertiser directly though (or do both). It's far more likely they'll respond to that. _________________ Frank Nordberg

Adsense publishers should not contact Adsense advertisers about their ads ... that is Google's responsibility. If you have a problem with an advert on Adsense, let Google know. It's their software doing the matching and serving, not the advertiser's.

You're right as usual Debs, but from a practical point of view it may be a good idea to contact the advertiser directly. Besides, in this case Google may decide that as long as the product is relevant how it's advertised isn't their business. _________________ Frank Nordberg

Well, Google actually takes a more stringent view on ads, and will kick ads for a variety of reasons, including lack of tight relevancy. Publishers can also restrict urls from showing on their sites through Adsense.
Advertising for "Adult" oriented sites is something Google does want to know about and something they will likely restrict to "adult" keyphrases, however.

It does seem a strange strategy on their part. I have no problem with any hosting company allowing adult sites, but I know many people are nervous of the adult area, and I wouldn't want an ad like that on my site, either.
I'd block the ad immediately, but I'd then contact the company and tell them what you've done and why. Explain that you have no problem with them, and would like their ads (just not that one). Help them come to the conclusion that many bigger players probably are blocking them, too.
Ask them to let you know when they change things, so you can unblock them again.
If they weren't expecting this ad to be delivered to the mainstream webmaster crowd, I think they might well have a word with Google themselves.
All the best,
Charlie. _________________ "Before I speak, I have something important to say."

Does cihost.com have an affiliate program? If Yes, an affiliate of cihost.com may be using AdWords to send traffic to cihost.com in hopes of generating affiliate commissions. I often see affiliate AdSense ads on various sites.

Good point.
All the more reason to have a word with the merchant, if this is the case, though.
Cheers,
