I was wondering if anybody has had luck converting recipe pages to sales? I get plenty of traffic on these pages, but no sales for recipe books. I've been tracking the hits, and out of 1000 unique visitors, there has been 0 clicks on any other links on the pages (including menu). It seems like people the grab the recipe and go. I did get a few Adsense clicks, but that was it.
Does anybody have any examples of recipe pages that convert (or any suggestions)? |

I am in the same situation. I am trying to monitize my recipe pages. Try adding links to some of the tools you use in the kitchen. Work the links into the method. Cast iron frying pans, high quality knives, etc.
I have just started to add them to my site in this manner time will tell how it works.

I am a vegetarian, and I visit vegan/vegetarian recipe sites a lot. I ahve a couple of suggestions:
1) If the recipe fits an unusual diet category (vegetarian, diabetic, weight loss recipes, etc), try offering links to books with more recipes in that category...and be sure to point out the book's relationship to the current recipe
2) If there are any unusual ingredients in the recipe, try linking the ingredient to an online store that sells it. I'm not aware of affiliate programs that fit this, but I'm sure there must be some out there 
I think that the link to kitchen accessories is also a good idea. Make the accessory relevant to the recipe if possible.

I have a site with a lot of recipes on it which makes a few book sales and $300 to $400 a month from AdSense. However, it's in a specialist niche, where people are keenly interested for health reasons (gluten-free recipes) so I'm not sure if anything I've learned there will apply to your site. I'm not doing anything special with it.
Perhaps the main point to learn is that ideally you need keen buyers with a good reason for wanting the products.

Linx, one of my BEST affiliates is a recipe site. YES, these sites/pages can generate hundreds of sales every month. Just make sure to make the products - you feature on the side - are interesting to your audience (read: targetted!) Sell kitchen- and food-related stuff, and you will succeed.

I'am glad somebody started a recipe site discussion, i make pennies daily from adsense and have no affiliate links though i'am in the top 1% of the web...does pointing affiliate links to kitchenware convert ...at what percentage?...same with the book and ebook strategy?. I'am not comfortable promoting amazon because of thier 1-day cookies. My niche is indian recipes, what affiate programs can i promote?

My recipe site affiliate has a beautiful 7.11% conversion rate. BUT he does much more than just putting up affiliate links. He actually has a Russian gift shop at his site, where he sells our products. I have already mentioned elsewhere on this forum the importance (for good conversion) of using datafeeds. In your case you can have several things at your recipe site. You can have a kitchen shop, a food shop (selling ethnic groceries) AND a gift shop. IF you work with datafeeds and actually feature products (and not just banners or text links), they WILL convert. Speaking from experience here.

| I'm been thinking for some time of creating a niche recipe site, but I'm wondering about the copyright laws. I know that you cannot copyright the ingredients of a recipe, but there is a potential copyright on the instructions for making the dish, or on a recipe collection as a whole (such as a cookbook). Also, do you gather recipes from other sources (and which ones??), allow users to post recipes or what? |

I think health or weight loss products are the way to go on these recipe sites. Or kitchenware (amazon has it all).

Diet products on sites where people go to find themselves something delicious to cook?!?! Don't!
Agree with the kitchenware. + ethnic food will also sell wonderfully on ethnically-oriented recipe sites.

Are you suggesting that i can consider amazon to promote kitchenware, books etc or search for a better merchant at CJ.com or linkshare?.

What I am suggesting is you working with datafeeds. They convert best (by far better than just banner/text links), especially at sites like yours.
As for Amazon, yes, they are good merchant. However, IMHO, you can sell equivalent stuff (kitchenware, books on cooking, ethnic food and souvenirs) at much better commission if you look beyond Amazon. There are plenty of good merchants out there. Yes, on CJ and LS. And also, do not forget SaS (shareasale.com), a much more popular network these days.

thanks Geno for your advice, i'll definitely look at datafeeds. Does datafeed from a merchant site mean i would be displaying actual products from the merchant site without me doing the cut and paste html links?
