Have you considered trying to find sites that sell the various exotic spices that you need for the recipes?

That way instead of trying to say to your customer 'you came for a curry recipe, how about buying a set of knives' you could say to them that for a certain recipe you need Gujarati Masala and the best stuff you have discovered online can be found here

I imagine this would be more convincing and a lot easier sell. The site I linked to doesn't seem to have an affiliate system however you could always approach them directly with the idea.

Other sites to consider might be

http://www.spiceswarehouse.com/
http://www.bulkfoods.com/spices.asp
http://www.natco-online.com/
http://www.getspice.com/
http://www.spicenflavor.com

Hope this gives you something to think about.

The other big question is whether your users are Indian themselves or just like the food. I love Indian food but I don't have any interest in other ethniccy products such as clothing etc. Finally although recipes online are good I still love beautiful full colour photo recipe books so maybe you could select a few winners from Amazon

Cheers
Mark

Excellent advice, Mark!

Roshan, do a little marketing research by asking people what India associates with in people's minds. Ask around this forum, and you will definitely get good hints. Wink I'm thinking rugs & Indian movies, but then again... that just me. Others may have other things coming to their minds when you say "India". Ask around! You don't have to come up with these things yourself. Try to get people brainstorm on stereotypes and assosications. That always helps.

Best of luck to you with it, Roshan!

I'm been thinking for some time of creating a niche recipe site, but I'm wondering about the copyright laws. I know that you cannot copyright the ingredients of a recipe, but there is a potential copyright on the instructions for making the dish, or on a recipe collection as a whole (such as a cookbook). Also, do you gather recipes from other sources (and which ones??), allow users to post recipes or what?

I would love to see more input about this; regarding copyright and sources information for recipes...

If you are not sure: contact each source and ask for permission. If you copy it from a book and the book says that you CAN'T - then DON'T. Some books/source may say: can copy with a link/reference back to them.

This is where you specifically tell the visitor exactly what they are getting.Nobody will give away their landing pages or sites, BUT they are all available online. Look for any competitive key phrases in the paid traffic space and there is a reason people are paying an arm and a leg to be there.
