I received this statement from the VEO report free newsletter at the product site veoreport.com

- If you are relying on article distribution links for
link popularity you can expect the effectiveness to
be severely diminished with the improved duplicate
content filters.

Doe anyone know what exactly is going to happen? How will the duplicate content filter feb 2006 google update affect link popularity from our articles out there pointing to our sites?

Does it mean publishing articles is not a good way to get incomming links for link relevancy and ranking anymore?

No one knows exactly what will happen except for Google. But go ahead and send the owner of that newsletter an email and ask him those questions, I'm sure he'll answer Smile

The only people who know work for Google.

In cases like this, what makes sense is to try to think like a search engine engineer, or a search engine owner.

What tends to happen is that some clever search engine optimization person discovers a good way to increase traffic. A few people see what's happening and copy the idea. Then along comes someone who invents software to simplify the idea, or builds a website promoting the idea, or writes a book about it.

Suddenly, thousands of people are using - and abusing - the technique.

If you've been online long enough, you've seen this trend with keyword density, meta tags, free-for-all sites, links, blog and ping, and now article distribution (and RSS feeds, too probably).

Inevitably, the next step is for search engines to react and try to figure out better methods of sorting out valuable, useful links from less valuable links, and useful pages from less useful pages.

I can't tell you exactly what is going to happen. However, it seems likely to me that search engines will get better and better at identifying articles which are truly unique - in other words, not appearing on dozens or hundreds of websites.

My prediction is that article distribution will continue to work to some degree.

My GUESS is that is will become much more effective to distribute unique articles to related websites than distributing them to article directories.

I don't think you'll be penalized for distributing articles to directories - I just think the technique will just become less effective than it is now.

Anyway, enough guesswork. Why don't we wait and see? Smile

To strengthen your website's chances, I strongly recomend that you fill it with unique, interesting, useful articles.

And if you know of a good site like that in your niche, see if you can get one of your articles published on that site, ideally with prominent links to it from other popular sites.

Thanks Allan, your answer is terrific!

I think it makes perfect sense that your article links only have credit when they are found on relevant quality websites.

It is ridiculous to be getting link credit from having your articles found in article directories alone. But isn't the true purpose of posting to article directories that of getting other people to read them and post them on their related quality sites instead?

Unless of course, if most people who own such sites don't bother looking for content from article directories anyway... then your articles remain only on the directories and that's why google has to discredit them for they are of no use.

Yes, that's a very important reason, and the method works well today. The big question is how long will it continue to work as well as it does today?

I will recommend to save on time and everything, get a good article and instead of submitting it in 100s of useless directories (having no editorial value), submit it in only quality article directories like ezinearticles.com plus find more specific article directories related to your content.
