Post subject: guidance on getting started

Hello everyone,
I've been reading the forums for a while and am trying to get as much information as I can before I make the plunge into this. I read Ken Envoys Affiliate master program as well. I am overwhelmed by all of the different options available to me.
A few questions I have:
1. Are there some other free affiliate start-up guides on the net that you recommend reading.
2. I am unsure whether to pick or a few affiliate merchants and build a site around that, adding some carefully worded content pages myself, or is it better to partner with someone who offers a full range of products (is that what clickbank, commission junction do?)
3. I'm not fond of the prospect of designing my own website. I would like to use a template of some type. Any pros/cons/suggestions.
4. I'm interested in looking at affiliate websites that people have created that promote non interenet related products that are successful. Any ideas how to search for them?
Thanks in adcance for any help and guidance you can offer. |

Hi Doug,
Welcome to the forums!
Since the "regulars" haven't jumped in here yet, I'll be happy to offer what I have. I have a tendency to ramble, so I'll do my best to make brief comments on each of your points:
| Quote: | | 1. Are there some other free affiliate start-up guides on the net that you recommend reading. |
I don't know of any other "freebies" that are available right now, and a load of other projects has put my own free ecourse on hold indefinitely. My best suggestion is to continue hanging around this forum, read everything you can in the archives, and ask questions. This is the most helpful forum I've ever been around. I'm proud to be a tiny part of it.

Best thing to do here: Find a quiet place and brainstorm a list of things that sound interesting to you. Try to come up with at least a dozen. Then reasearch your topics at Clickbank and Commission Junction. Read about the different programs offered, and think about the different angles you could take with each one. Picture in your mind writing an article each day on this topic. Try to find the topic that you think you would feel most comfortable with, because you'll be "living" this topics for weeks or months to come.
Once you have your topic, try to find 2-3 related affiliates from Clickbank, CJ, BeFree, Linkshare, or others. Write your content, weave in the links.

At first, I used www.aplustemplates.com. They used to have a free section. I'm not sure if they do anymore. I would edit these pages in FrontPage. From there, I realized that I could create my own very basic templates purely with tables in FrontPage. HTML folks will cringe, but the first site I built with this technique - www.water-filter-guide.com , is very clear, easy to read, and has a few top 10 rankings for selective keywords.
I've improved my techniques since I built that site, but I still use the same basic idea today. I also build sites with SBI, which I would recommend using at least some of the time if you ever plan to build multiple sites.
| Quote: | | 4. I'm interested in looking at affiliate websites that people have created that promote non interenet related products that are successful. Any ideas how to search for them? |
Well, there's one in the paragraph above. It's a mini-site, more in the Phil Wiley style of doing things.
One little trick I know is to find topics in CJ, then do searches for those broad topics. A web site with dashes in between the words is often (not always) a tell tale sign of an affiliate site.
To see a broad variety of affiliate sites, check out James Martell's portal at 1st-in-net-shopping.com. Though they are all designed from the same template, there is much to be learned from his methods. His book is really expensive as ebooks go, but it's probably the best ebook I've ever read from a step-by-step perspective.
Well, I got long-winded again. Funny how I keep saying that I can't possibly write enough to compile an ebook on anything!
Hope this helps,
~Mike |

Grrrrrrr...
That was me. Blasted thing timed out I guess.....
Also, two of the links above have periods at the end of them by accident. Delete those after you click on the link to see the sites.

Mike has provided awesome tips on getting started and given you some great reference points, including Martell's site (one I visit frequently btw).
SBI is a great tool to get started, especially if you don't want to mess with html, SEO, etc. As far as the Sitesell Affiliate Masters ebook, you honestly can't find a better free guide, whether you use SBI or not.
And Mike? Regulars? Ahem, you are one! lol

Hi Debs,
Thanks!
I'm honored to be considered one of the "regulars" at this point.
I'd love to contribute more, but once I start writing, I tend to go on for so long that half my day is gone by the time I'm finihsed!!
Doug,
Debs brought up a great point that I forgot. In addition to the Affiliate Masters Guide, the SBI Action Guide is another awesome free book that compliments the Affiliate Masters book, whether you intend to build an SBI site or not.
You can grab a quick copy at my sig site below.
Take care!

Hey Doug,
One of the best free guides to affiliate marketing that I've found is the Affiliate Masters course by Ken Evoy.
Just send a blank email to
yourtams@sitesell.net
and you'll be emailed various lessons of the course over the period of a few days.
Let me know what you think of it! _________________ Robert

To your questions: SEE MY SITE BELOW
Pick a few good affiliate partners and experiment. It's good to find products that are in high demand and find something that you are truly interested in.
3. I'm not fond of the prospect of designing my own website. I would like to use a template of some type. Any pros/cons/suggestions.
Templates are a good way to get started. Once you have a framework to operate in, you can add to it as you go.
You also might want to look at the Plug-In Profit Site system which addresses this same concern.
4. I'm interested in looking at affiliate websites that people have created that promote non interenet related products that are successful. Any ideas how to search for them?
Search http://www.google.com for product categories that you would be interested in along these lines and begin to investigate the sites the come up and observe how they are setup and what products they endorse.
All the best,

I'm new to marketing and affiliate programs also. I've recently joined Markus Allen's 5 day e-course program after having received free email marketing tips from him for over a year. Great content, I've learned so much. The course is free and available to trial members. The users post questions and answers to one another and to Markus who replies personally... Even directly thru email... Much of the content is geared toward which affiliate programs are the most profitable. In fact Day One focuses on them... I'm still working on my website, but with Markus' program, I already have action. You can check it out here : http://www.tinyurl.com/2ehno
