I use FrontPage 2003, with mixed feelings. Shared borders and themes come with their own set of headaches, but can be used as long as you are on a server that supports FrontPage extensions.
They are pretty consistent across browsers since they are composed of HTML and are put together with the body of the page when it is uploaded. At least that's how it works when you use them in a FrontPage theme.
You can't usually edit shared borders directly (at least not when they're part of a theme) but there are some ways you can get around it if you want something extra in the border. For example, if you look on my site, you'll see my logo in the upper left on the top shared border. I put that in manually and grouped the nav buttons, banner and logo inside a table. It takes some tinkering and it definitely helps if you have a fairly good idea of what you're doing, which just takes practice. If you're not that familiar with HTML or with FP, you might want to start with what FP gives you through a theme or web component.
You also might want to try it on a test website, or at least backup your current site in case the experiment doesn't go well and you want to restore what you had.

HI starhugger, thanks for telling me your experiences with using shared borders from Fp 2003.
Actually i was asking if i use shared borders, will it affect my search engine listings. I mean i put link bars with key words, and hoping it helps in my search engine rankings.
I know search engine dun now like frames website, so if i use a shared borders from Fp 2003, will the search engine dun like it or accept it?

My understanding of shared border links in FP is that FP takes the name of the page/link and the button or banner graphic, and creates a new graphic image with it which is displayed on the page. So SEs are probably not going to read the words from the buttons and page banners, as such. But since FP is getting the link name from the Page Title or somesuch, the SE will be able to get it from there too, if that makes sense.
I have a feeling that it helps to reinterate the keywords and titles in the page content itself, say as an H1 heading or something, which allows the SEs to pick it up more easily. But that's just theory of mine.
Beyond that, I'm not sure how SEs process the information in a shared border. Much would depend, I suspect, on whether the keywords are only available in graphic form on the buttons themselves or if it's in text form somewhere in the code, and that I don't know for sure.
Your best bet might be to create a page the way you want it, upload it, and then View Source of that page to see what the SE is seeing when it "reads" that page.
