Post subject: ??'s regarding copywrites, out going links to news sites...

Hi,
I hope it's ok to ask about this in this forum.
I would appreciate any knowledge regarding out going links to news sites etc. that are focused on your sites theme.
I know that you cannot copy and paste the whole article onto your site unless you purchase reprint rights But I notice that Many sites just copy the headline, a credit to the writer, publication along with the 1st paragraph of the article. Then read more... with the link to that article.
Is this legal and can you have any problems regarding copywrites?
Many sites say any content for commercial use must purchase reprint rights, yet as I explained above everybody is doing it.
Here's an example from technologymarketing.com
http://www.rsicopyright.com/ics/prc_main/select_usertype.html?prc=3.5647.884636
Does that mean you can legally do it as explained above or not?
Thank you for any info on this.

Hey -
Have you considered contacting the sites, asking if they mind you sending them some free traffic?
Then simply post the article title, author, and a bit of teaser text.
You'd get your articles ... they would get the traffic (too) ...
Lots of marketers do this every day. It's a win-win for everyone. If they want to be selfish and pig-headed about it, find another source who appreciates you.
After all, you're marketing for them, too (at a zero cost to them.)
Just an idea -
God Bless you,
Chip Tarver

Another thing you can do is contact sites about reprinting their article on your site with a link to their site. Many sites are open to this kind of exchange because it helps everyone.
You don't have to "purchase" anything, and once you get permission, you can post the entire article if you like.

Thanks Chip and Debs for your ideas. I'll try contacting some of the sites regarding their articles.
I came across an article with some information regarding my original question on this post but I'm still trying to confirm if you can legally copy the heading, giving a credit to the writer and copying the 1st paragraph with an outgoing link to their site for the complete article.
More comments on this would be greatly appreciated.
Thanks,
Tina |

I know you can use quoted portions of articles if credit is given so I don't think you would run into a problem doing it the way you outlined.

I agree. Copyright laws in various countries allow short extracts to be quoted, as long as proper credit is given - where from and who by.

Thanks Debs and Charlie. That's what I thought and I know Sharon Fling of http://www.geolocal.com and others follows that on their sites.
I just wanted to check and make sure it's ok before I went ahead so I don't have any legal problems later.
Thanks,
Tina |
