In on of my last post, I posted that someone copied my google ad, ok... no big deal, it was an ad going straight to the merchants site. I've gone created a site for this merchant and tested it with a few related keywords and seems to pull in more sales than just sending the visitor straight to the merchants site. I'm now planning on putting this site on all my keywords, but I'm afriad that the person who copied my google ad will also copy my site. Why do I think this? becuase there are 2 people competing with me, the person who copied my ad made there own site for the merchant the second competitor copied there site. I know my site is 100 times better than theres just by wording and layout. I know I'm competing with people that like to copy each other and I don't want them copying my site. What can I do to prevent this?
Thanks
Tony

There isn't a lot you can do to prevent it. Some tools exist to "deter" but don't really stop it. If the site is copied, however, you can take action to force removal of the copied site. Do a search on the forum for copyright and you should find a detailed thread on the steps to take if the site is copied. It works so it's worth searching for.

If you are convinced the problem is dirty tricks with Adwords, I'd mention it to Google. If they think you have a case, there's a good chance they'll "have a quiet word" with the guilty. That should do the trick.

Failing that, you can always start more formal proceedings, as Debs suggests.

Cheers,
Charlie.

It's possible that the two copied sites are the same person. Anyway, I have heard that if Google finds duplicate sites it penalizes the duplicates. How it knows which is the original and which is the duplicate I haven't a clue.

Hi Tony!
There are a few tools available to protect your website technicaly from
being copied, but there are almost worthless if someone really wants to
copy your website (HTML Code Guard. Javascripts...).
Everything you write on your website is automaticly protect by the copyright
law. So if someone is stealing your content word for word you should take a
lawyer.
You could also contact Google to have a look at the copied site.
It's difficult to say when someone steals your layout and take your content
and change them. In this case only a lawyer could help you whether this
is allowed or not, but remember most of these guys are sitting in Eastern
Europe or Asia, so it's very difficult to get after them.

All the best
