How old is the website? Is there "NO COMPETITION" in google for the niche or some but not really that fierce?
Are you doing a better job then the top sites listed in google now?
i.e.
-number of backlinkes
-Anchor text, PR of site, number of linkes on linked page etc. for the incoming links
-Your on page SEO stuff such as TItle tag, Meta Description & Keywords, Header, ALT img, keyword density etc. are they all as good or better then the sites your competing against.
All of the above really makes no difference yet if your site is under I'd say 4-6 months old. But if it's older then that...I'd take a look at where you are currently ranking in google for your keywords, and then see what the above competitors are doing better then you...
Google is a strange beast and doesn't treat every niche, site the same so it can take some toying.
Good Luck |

If you are listed in dmoz you should be recieving a good amount of backlinks and future pr..but the problem may be your dmoz links...
If your anchor link in dmoz does not have your exact niche keywords, you most likely will rank high for the name of your site, instead of the desired keyword. All those links is telling google "this site is about AB" instead of the desired A keyword. So google thinks your site is about AB. So now it might take a little more work for you to raise rankings for "A".
E.g.
Here is a example of Allan's site www.cheap-computers-guide.com/
Type cheap computers in google:
http://www.google.com/search?hl=en&q=cheap+computers
but type in cheap computers guide, and his site pops up #1 for the name
http://www.google.com/search?hl=en&lr=&q=cheap+computers+guide |
