Post subject: Keyword Rule of Thumb?
|
|
|
Has anyone noticed any rule of thumb for how many times a keyword needs to appear on a page for AdSense to target ads to the keyword?
For example, suppose you put up a site on home remodeling with the domain name reflecting the theme.
You build one page on the site about wallpaper. The file name, keyword meta tag, and page title all concern "wallpaper."
Would two paragraphs of information with 2 mentions of "wallpaper" in the content be enough to get AdSense to put wallpaper ads on the page instead of general home remodeling ads? How about 10 paragraphs with 20 mentions of "wallpaper?"
I realize the actual answer is "it depends" - I'm just wondering if anyone has noticed a trend (rule of thumb)?

The targeting may not be anything you can confine to a set rule. Couple things about Adsense:
1. targeting improves as time goes on (making me wonder if a page referrer from and to are somehow used by Adsense to improve page targeting)
2. the keywords Advertisers bid and how they write their ads determine whether they will show for certain phrases ... you may only get remodeling ads for wallpaper keyphrases
3. #2 above is also determined by which Advertisers opt to stay in the contextual ad market with Adsense, since they can opt out and have their ads show on just the SERPs.
Test having the keyphrase you want targeted just above and below the Adsense code in the html as well to help hone in on the keyphrases you want.

I've noticed the same thing Debs. In my limited experience with Adsense so far, it appears that when I add the Adsense code to a new page I first get ads that would be more general to the theme of my site and after a period of time (usually within a day) the ads get more targeted to that specific page.
As for your question on a rule of thumb for keywords Bobby ...

I tend to go somewhere in between this with good results so far, but my only rule of thumb is that I use more keywords than are probably necessary to get the point across (and variations, not just a single repeated keyword), but not too many that the writing is poor and it looks like I'm stuffing my pages with keywords - a bit of a balancing act. Follow the general page optimization guidelines at Google and you cannot go wrong, but don't be afraid to use more keywords than an english professor would like.

Don't be afraid to split your keyphrases up either ... for instance if you use "round green widgets" you can also use round widgets, green widgets, and slip each part of the keyphrase in there alone as well. You might be surprised how well that works too.
