Hi all,

One of the link exchange sites that I use say that if you
have more than 50 outgoing links on one page it can
lower your site ranking. They suggest that I split my
links into a few separate pages - is this all correct ?

If it is, what's the best way to do it ? It's not much of a
problem if you do it manually, but most of these link
exchange sites are semi-automatic and use one single
url - how do you create a split ?

Hope this makes sense.

Many thanks.

John

It is true and according to reports and articles I've read, begining from the last update it is prefered to keep clear from the 25 links per page.

About spliting your pages I can't tell you how or if you can, because I don't know which link exchange programs you are using.

ITS BS - you can put as many links as you like on a page --- just think of the user - build the page for the user. I have pages with >500 links per page that do OK.

Can't blame you for being confused, John. Smile I suspect all these perspectives are true in some way. I wonder if the key is how much that page winds up looking like a spam site page? If you have nothing but a bunch of outbound links, along with some ads, it will look like a thousand other sites I'm seeing more and more of lately. They harvest URLs on a particular topic, slap 'em on a page along with some Adsense, and call it a website. Mad

If you only list the links and don't add some of your own content (like reviews or other comments) about the links, for example, then that page might wind up ranking lower with Google because it looks like a spam site. And Google is reportedly getting increasingly serious about identifying sites that don't add anything of quality and ranking them accordingly. And just to complicate things further, Google is continually changing its ranking algorithms and criteria, as it searches for a more effective way to weed out the spam sites. So a strategy that will win you a higher rank today might drop you to a lower rank tomorrow. Confused

The likelihood of getting a lower rank for your page probably increases with the more links you have on that page, since it increases the spammy look and feel of it, especially if you don't add any relevant content about the links. And if you don't have enough elsewhere on your site (quality and quantity of content) to conteract that impression, the whole site might run the risk of getting dragged down with it.

Even these spam sites seem to limit the number of links per page, even though it's usually a LOT of links. They seem to pull the links in from a database so that they can rotate them, probably to give the impression that they are updating their "content" frequently, hoping to get noticed by the SEs more. They ad "content" to the links by providing a brief quote from the site itself, which of course only creates duplicate content which Google frowns on. So the strategy seems to be to get the most pages (and hopefully clicks) for the least amount of work. They add nothing original to it.

So I would think the best idea is to avoid that kind of approach to your links page. Instead, keep the number of links relatively low, make sure you're adding some of your own relevant content in some way, and keep the rest of your site growing with quality content.

I'm largely speculating about this, but I hope that helps! Smile
