|
|
Does anyone know what the relationship between keyword count and expected traffic for say a #1 search engine spot (or top 10) is? Using Overture or Wordtracker as reference?
Also, some keywords that seem aswome in Overture, turn out to be very poor in Wordtracker. Does anyone have extensive experience with actual traffic that came in using analysis from either one (Overture and Wordtracker) and solve this dilemma?
Thanks,
Yaron |

Hmmm... This has no bearing on my question. I do not need search engine cooperation for this, just experienced affiliates.
For example, someone couls say:
I built a page around key-phrase "widgets from space". This key-phrase has 50000 searches on Overture. The page is ranked #1 on Google, and as a result I'm getting 10000 visitors per month who search for "widgets from space" in Google.

It used to be said that Overture gets as many searches on a given term in one month as all the free search engines get in one day. This is very general, but the best I have to work with.

Hi Yaron,
From my experience, although not 100%, the count correlation between Overture and Google is pretty much the same. Of course, there are much more people using Google than Overture (BTW, this may change as Yahoo purchased Overture?)
Regarding the chances to get a top 10 ranking, you have to check the competition on a keyword phrase, means, how many pages appear when you search for a certain keyword phrase? The fewer pages, your chances are better.
A rough formula is the [search popularity] divided by the [competition]. You should select the keyword phrases that get the bigger results.
Good luck,

Consider also the level of competition from the top ranked sites and the potential to monetarise for any given keyword.
Don't necessarily be scared off by large amounts of poor competition, but also if a high traffic key phrase is not being fought over, ask whether you can really make money from it (if no-one else much is even trying).
Just my thoughts,

- Although I tend to agree, and this is sounds logical, one thing I have learned is that my opinions and the real world doesn't co-ordinate startegies one with another. What I mean is, it is better to test and be wrong, than assume somthing and miss valuable traffic...
Good luck!

I'll second that.

| I may be wrong, but I think the original poster was asking how much traffic he could expect from having a number one spot at Google for a particular keyword. This is something I would like to know as well. |

There is only one answer for that:
Be no. 1 for a certain keyword and see how much traffic you get
Good luck!

I think I'll know soon enough.
Another interesting thing is that I'm currently getting about 60% traffic for keyword combinations that I did not optimize for. I'm wondering how that percentage will change once my site is fully indexed by the SEs and I have more top 10 spots for the keywords that I did optimize for.

Yaron, this is something I have often been wondering about my self.
Because even if you rank No1 you never know how many % acually click through on your site.
I often ruffelly think that Overture results is about the same as Google.
I am probably wrong and Google has more searches but it is kind of easy to think of them as the same.
One of my sites has No2 in my main "Search Word" it has No1-2 in all the other "sub search words". All in all overture counts about 50.000 searches. I have about 800 visitors on my site a day.
800*30 = 24.000 visitors a month
If I am right my site has about 50% clickthrough rate, but nobody really knows.
With an other site I focus on three search phrase.
one I am No1 = Overure 24.000
Two I am around No4 = Overture 50000
so Overture searches 75.000 a month
This site has about 900 visitors a day
900* 30 = 27.000
I think this site has way less clickthrough because the search phrases are not all as relative as with the first site I mentioned.
Almost all my traffic comes through Google / Yahoo
You see the numbers are not very exact, but I would love to get more real numbers like this so we can get closer to the subject of how close Google is too Overture search results.
About the other question, Wordtracer v.s Overture, I have no idea.
All I know is that I like Overture better, probably not really professional but that is how I am

Thanks HorseMan. Your examples were exactly what I was asking for. I understand that it's not an exact science because there are so many variables that go into search engine traffic. But we could probably get an idea within an order of magnitude for most cases.

The full version of Wordtracker lets you query from Overture instead of their own database. This is good if you like to use Overture data, but, like myself, hate the SBI keyword tool, and don't want to do all this manually. Wordtracker is much easier to use, doesn't have the restrictions of SBI, and has better analytical tools.
