How do people go about managing large sites?

For example a music lyrics site. Lets say they have 100,000 lyrics. I know they have a database which holds all of the lyrics. But then what? Is there a single template which all of the pages are built off of? So 90% of the pages on the site are dynamic?

Or do they have some offisite program which spins though the database and dynamically builds static pages and then they upload all of the pages?

Most likely you have used a CMS and just didn't know it. Basically all blogging software is a CMS to make the process of creating a site easy.

Content Mangament Systems place the information you input into pre-selected templates and create a static page from it. Thus you can go back and edit as necessary or delete it even.

CMS systems range from the simple - Blogger - to the very complex. To have a good CMS built specific to your site can be very expensive but there are open source options out there and if you know how to code you can alter it to fit your needs. Take a look at www.opensourcecms.com
