Yes, it is. Great point! It really does shine a new light on the thread. I never really thought of it that way. Bravo.
I guess a distinction is that Google really does add value to someone other than themselves by this process. Most scraping operations don't really meet this standard.
Still though, as you say, the irony is rich.

I agree with your analogy, but not your conclusion.
Yes, we all are abusing the poor, and polluting the world more than we need to. Me included, I agree. Hypocrisy is rampant.
But why is this a good reason to repeat the same mindset in yet another arena?
If the poor get bird flu, we get it too. If we pollute the air, we all have to breath it. If we trash the SERPs, the main victim is us. We don't need the language of morality to understand this.
All that said, I can see the logic in assuming that a critical mass of webmasters will never understand that quality SERPs are in their own individual interest. That's a dark, but not unreasonable, assumption and from that assumption there is logic in grabbing what you can while you can.
One interesting trend that might be revealed from these kind of threads across a variety of forums, is that it seems older members are more often the advocates of idealism, whereas younger members are more often approaching it from a more cynical "real world" perspective. If true, that's an interesting reversal of traditional positions. Rich thread food that!

Let's set aside morality etc. I agree that language is distracting.
Think of all the human minds on the planet as small parts of a larger machine.

This is a very useful thread and I appreciate the information shared. I particularly found Allan and Robertb's posts helpful.
I've been an affiliate marketer for a while now but haven't been to "affiliate forums" until recently so the different "categories" of sites was new information.
