In my opinion... both banners and product content are good as long as they are tasteful and very contextual to the actual CONTENT / MEAT of the page.

I just hate visiting a site that is blatantly trying to sell everything to me. That is just not right.

Provide content first, that is why the visitor is there.
Once you have the visitor's attention and satisfaction you may get the bonus clicks that would follow.
