This really is a humbling experience. Having been online for a while now and even have a couple of websites, I have a confession!
Draw in a bit closer because I'm going to whisper.....does anyone know of a good, simple, baby steps guide to cPanel?
Everyone seems to be flying through this business of manipulating sites, pointing them to goodness knows where and setting up email accounts which are spam resistant etc etc....except me!
I recently quit using a hosting company as it seemed just like a never ending email dialogue which took ages and got nowhere in the end.
If anyone can refer me to a good tutorial (I'll even pay for it if necessary) I'd be very grateful.
Cheers,
Norman |

Norman,
What are your specific questions?
I think you just need to set up a testing domain and play around with the cpanel for a bit, testing what does what, and not having to worry about having visitors see you.
You can MSNMessenger me and I'll help you when I'm on.

Ok Andy I'll do that for a while.
Maybe then I'll get back to you if/when I get stuck again.
Many thanks for your prompt reply.
Cheers,

Hey there Norman!
I can certainly relate to your frustration as I was overwhelmed the first time I dealt with cPanel and WHM, but with practice you'll learn your way around quickly.
Two things that will help you though are....
1) The cPanel user guide http://www.cpanel.net/docs/cpanel/
2) Sites like http://www.webhostgear.com/cid_4.html and http://www.webmasterstop.com/64.html with online tutorials (easily found by googling "cpanel user tutorial")
Hope these resources get you off on the right foot, but feel free to ask any questions that come up!
Cheers,

Not sure if this will help, but here's an observation for what it's worth.
Cpanel, and other similar control panels, are pretty amazing. They give us control over our sites that was previously unheard of. Who here remembers when the process for setting up a new email account was to call your ISP, pay $10, and then wait 3 days for them to set it up?
We've come along way.
On the other hand...
It's very possible to get swamped learning and using all these options and features. It would be easy to spend the next 5 years on the Net learning all the gadgets, and reading all the ebooks, and not doing anything that actually makes money.
As we are offered more and more options it becomes ever more important to carefully analyze what we're going to invest time in.
We might focus ourselves on 5 steps to affiliate marketing success:
1. research
2. keywords
3. articles
4. links
5. monetize
Which Cpanel features directly help us move forward on one of these steps? Not too many. Almost none?
There is a lot of fun stuff in Cpanel, and maybe most of it is best viewed as just that. Fun stuff you explore after you've made some money relentlessly pursuing the above 5 steps.
I hope this helps. It depends on you and your goals of course, but I'm guessing you can for now safely ignore the vast majority of what you see in Cpanel. Each of the Cpanel features will still be there when you find you have a really good reason to use them.
I'm guessing a serious challenge facing many of us is that there is simply too much stuff on the Net. All the options screaming at us from every direction can make it really hard to focus.
Remember, a lot of folks made a lot of money from their sites, before Cpanel and similiar great tools were available.
Good luck! _________________ Free Forum And Ezine Hosting

That's all good sound advice.
Thank you Steve for your reference to the URLs to get further training and for offering more advice if it becomes necessary.
Also to Phil, yes there is so much stuff on the Net bombarding us from every direction. I'm glad to hear that most of what is on cPanel is merely fun stuff which can wait till I'm more fluent with its more important functions.
For now though - on with the work!
Cheers,
Norman |
