Post subject: server timed out fp2002
|
|
|
Hi,
I have been using fp2002. We all have to keep adding
content. Lately as I'm building pages the server times out
when I hit save. Then I usually have to delete the page
that I have been working on and then the server is ok.
The host usually says they can upload fine within
fp. So it is usually something on my end.
Has this happened to anyone. Is fp2003 more reliable
at keeping connected to the server than fp2002.

I have dsl verizon. I just delete the page, I see now I
have to delete the page from within my folder first not
within fp otherwise fp will remember the page.
I deleted the page from fp, then I checked
that it was gone from my the folder not within
fp.
Went back later to fp the page was back and
it was back in the folder not within fp.
Very frustrating.
I don't know how to prevent this, happens sometimes. |

From what I see FP only publishes the pages I have
changed. Didn't know I could either publish the whole
site or just the pages I change.
Where do I find this option.

Jeremy,
Why not use FP to generate your web site on the hard drive then use a program like WSftp or whatever to just transfer your files. I find that efficient as I don't have to be on line while composing.
You need only ftp the page(s) you've created/edited.
It also allows the reverse to capture your web site back to an empty folder if you muck up your existingset of files or have a drive crash without a recent backup. Shock, horror!!
Hope that helps.

Thanks Wally.
I'll study up on that, don't know to much
about WSftp.
Couldn't I also just turn my modem off
while I build in fp, then turn it on when
its time to publish.

I use Cute FTP Pro for all my ftp requirements - not sure cost vs. the other tools.
Another consideration is the option to upgrade to FrontPage 2003.
Maybe the publish features are better?
Dabrat76 - what version are you on? 2003? Maybe this is the diff... ?? _________________ Andrea Thomson

Hi Andrea,
It was a surprise and pleasure to meet
you on the bus to Fess Parker.
I have been reading, seems I can keep fp2002,
but turn off the fp extensions and use Cute FTP Pro.

Wally,
My host said I keep fp extensions on,
then just set up my ftp program.
Even though fp extensions are on, because
it is via ftp, it is more secure, then via fp, that's
the difference?

I just bought cute ftp, now my host says
I can not use cute ftp and frontpage together
or I will corrupt the files.
If I use fp to create my site, I must use fp extensions
to publish.
Why the advice about ws ftp and cute ftp
Can anyone clear this up. |

Hi Jeremy,
You don't have to use Frontpage to upload your site - you can use CuteFTP. Where you'll run into problems is if you mix the two. If you upload something via FTP and then publish with Frontpage, you'll run into problems.
I ran into problems on one site doing this. Frontpage basically stores information about the site itself (that's those _private and _vti_cnf folders it creates). If you use an FTP program to upload your site, Frontpage doesn't update its data and seems to choke on the files sometimes (at least it did for me).
The other thing that can cause problems when using FTP and Frontpage is if you edit your .htaccess file. Frontpage apparently uses the .htaccess file to manage some things and if you change it manually you can sometimes cause problems (again I speak from experience).

John,
What is the difference between upload and publish,
I thought they were the same.
This is what the host emailed me...
******************
If you use FrontPage to create your website, then you will almost always
have
to use FP to publish the site, as FrontPage uses special themes, borders,
buttons, and other things in their coding that require the use of FP
extensions. So, using your Cute FTP to publish a website created in FP
would
possible corrupt your FP created website since you are not using the
extensions as part of the publishing process. It is not recommended to
mix
the use of the two programs. Either use FrontPage to create and publish
together, or use another program plus Cute FTP to publish.

Uploading and publishing are essentially the same thing. Publishing is just the term FP uses for its own uploading process.
I suppose your host is right to a certain degree. If you're using some of the unique FP features like shared borders, navigation and so on you probably have to publish your site using FP for those things to work.
The only FP feature I use on my sites (which use Andrea's templates) is the included content function. Interestingly, this function seems to be handled on our end rather than the server's end.
If you open a page that uses an FP include in a text editor, the included content is actually already in place. FP doesn't show it in the HTML code view, but it seems it is there. If that's the only FP-specific function you use, you should be okay. |
