I have a JM site that has been up for about a year. Looking at the traffic over the last year, I can see where a sub-niche of this site could possibly do very well and I'm thinking about creating a new site around this sub-topic.

I'm wondering if anyone has any experience doing this? If you have, how much did it affect your original site? I'm debating because I don't want to rob traffic from my original site, but at the same time I think a more targeted site might do even better.

I've done this with a few of my sites (though they're just a few months old so it's too early to tell), but the more targeted sites, even though they're newer, make more for me right now. I would definitely do one over the sub-niche.

I believe Allan mentioned this somewhere before, about how being your own competition isn't so bad...

Hey John (&MM) Smile

I created a couple of niche sites based on other (broader topic) sites I had built.

I watched the trends and noticed that certain pages generated more traffic. These weren't always product pages - in fact, in most cases it was a series of articles on one niche.

The sites are young (like MM) but I am noticing that they are taking off more quickly than the ones which have no (personal) research/experience.

Let's talk more at CJU John! Wink

This is a really good topic that you have a couple of options with.

Building a site over a larger niche is a great way, as mentioned, to discover which sub-niches are in demand within that niche.

Once you've arrived at that, then you have a couple options.

If you're going to design a site on that sub-niche with a new domain, then there are a couple of precautions I'd recommend. Google doesn't like ranking multiple sites by the same individual for any given phrase.

That makes sense, you don't want all 10 results to be from the same person just using different sites.

I'm not saying this is cheating the system, it's just an easier way to make sure your QUALITY information is still shown.

Try to place your 2nd site on a different host; as this will avoid them having the same IP address. Also, consider registering the site in business name, spouse's name, even a different location as long as it's legitimate. Another option is getting a privacy domain where the WHOIS information isn't available.

Another option I'd consider doing is something like this:

And link to these various subdomains from the original site. Maybe in an article you've posted on Blue widgets at widgets.com, you can say " for more information, visit blue.widgets.com

Just a couple thoughts.
