I really really appreciate all your encouragment. Larry you are an inspiration.
Thank you all and especially Allan when it is me that should be sending you words of encouragement at this time, and I do. Thanks for telling me it took a year to make a profit on one of your sites- I guess am being too impatient I only started my site at the end of July.
From what I have read it is reciprocal linking to highly ranked sites that get you a higher listing in Google. But- I am not being very successful in getting links. People just don't answer. One webmaster did and then I discovered all his links are on an orphan page that no one can reach! I am hanging out for SBI Value Exchange to happen.
Not sure I understand the PR vs page rank thing though. When I say page rank I mean the number you are in Google search results and PR means popularity rating out of 10 which shows up on the Google toolbar. Is that right? _________________ How to sleep well every night |

Liz,
Page Rank and PR are the same, the toolbar thing as you mentioned. Ranking is how you place in the results with quotes around your keyphrase, as show in SBI.
When you take your Ranking, combined with your PR (page rank) then this is how you place in the search results of Google for your keyphrase WITHOUT quotes which is what we all really want to place well for.
So you can see how important those backlinks are!
Hope this clarifies.

Hello again Liz.

'Fraid not, but you're not alone!
PR stands for Page Rank. This is what is indicated in the Google toolbar.
If you use "page rank" to mean position in the Google search results you will confuse us all!
The best way to get around the problem is to say my site has a PR or Google PageRank (the Google trademark) of 1 (say), or I'm number 6 in Google for "antique widgets unearthed" - depending what you mean.
To be honest, PageRank is one of the most often misunderstood topics I've found. Just ask Sean Burns...
It's almost as common as mixing up Java and Javascript
Cheers,
Charlie.

Does it matter who links to you?
Let's say someone has a website with lots of links and wants to include you. However that person doesn't require a reciprocal link. If that website has a good PR would your website benefit?
Would you suffer if that website had a totally different theme?

You won't suffer if you don't link back. But if the page your listing is on has more than 100 links, it's unlikely you would have any benefit from the link at all.
If a page has a PR of 5 and 100 links on the page, each page will get 1/100 of the 5 PR (simplistic explanation). If they have 101 links, and you are #101, you won't get a thing. Hardly worth it.
If you have a link from a site with a PR 5, and 10 total links on their page, you will get 1/10 of 5, or .5 PR from the site.
You don't want to exchange links with sites that have 100's of links on a page, even if PR wasn't a factor since these pages are commonly viewed as Free For All link pages and penalized by the SE's.
Personally, I try to stay within a reasonable 25 links per page, that's about the limit I have to view a page, and I exchange links for more than just PR, I want my visitors to have a site of interest as well.

Debs,
Thanks for taking the time to respond. Linking can be a real pain...
I wonder how many people would want to link with a site with a low PR if it would bleed their PR. Doesn't seem to make too much sense.

Well if you just look at the simplistic explanation it wouldn't. But you have to remember, those links back to your site (whoever you may be) are viewed very favorably by Google in particular, and more so if your key site focus (primary keyphrase) is included in the anchor text link.
It's worth it

| Also, that link is a potential visitor to their site. |
