If you're looking for a good free way to promote your website, I would have to say the best way to do so is through link exchanges.
However, I've found that traffic exchange programs are also a great way to bring traffic to your site. I've promoted a few of my hobby sites strictly through traffic exchanges and saw my alexa rank increase and my PR increase from 0 to 2 - not too shabby.

The real question is how good it really is? I believe that googles rank will eventually limit your PR since you are giving links back to all those who link to you. The best way I think is to get natural links and refresh the content of your page as often as possible.

I agree, don't waste your time with traffic exchanges it is more productive to spend time increasing your links, developing content and automating the chores.

Yes, traffic exchanges can increase your Alexa rankings, but the quality of traffic from exchanges is extremetly low.
Don't waste your time with them!

I realize this is a very old thread but having just spent the last couple of hours going over my Google Analytics report for my AutoResponder site, I have to say that I do concur.
When I compare conversion rates across all the various ways I am promoting right now, I find that the traffic exchanges are the absolute worst.
The site itself converts very well with targeted traffic that I get from article marketing, search engines, ppc, and so on. These conversion rates range from 10% to well over 20% in some cases.
But the conversion rates from the traffic exchanges range from 0% to around .30%. One might say that at least it's something but when you really think about it, your time is better spent on those sites that bring you high quality visitors.
At 10%, I can expect to receive 1 new sale for every 10 visitors.
At .30%, I can expect to receive 1 new sale for every 300 visitors.
And remember .. that's the HIGH side for visitors from traffic exhanges!
Personally, my goal is to focus on getting more and more of that high quality traffic that comes from article marketing, search engine optimization, ppc listings, etc...
There's just no substitute for quality.

The process of link exchange is very simple, as you have to choose some of the best websites in your niche and request them to include the link to your website on their WebPages. This way, you can easily share the traffic of those websites.
