My sites (at micfo.com) are down on an almost daily basis, so I am forced to yet again go host shopping. Sad

<INSERT 6 GIGS OF WHINING HERE>

If anybody has a host they'd like to brag about, I'm listening.

Here's two I'm considering:
http://axishost.com
http://site5.com

Thanks!

If you want 6 GIGS of space (space or width you wanted?) why don't you go for your own server? They are cheap like $60 or $100 these days.

I still like 1and1.com

Some of their bigger packages have better bandwidth, but their "over charge" for extra bandwidth usage isn't that bad... $1 per GB over. I have seen many charge $5 per GB over.

I'm not fond of 1&1 personally; I find them clunky and slow.

I've had a good experience with westhost.com, but it's possible I'm starting to outgrow them.

All the "more serious" people I talk to have a dedicated server. I think that's the way to go when you're getting some traffic.

Ditto here. I have a regular hosting package and a dedicated server through them.

Perhaps your site is simply hosted on a bum server. Do you have a paid account with them, or are you on the 3 years for free deal? My regular hosting package is a little slower than my dedicated server, but that's certainly expected. In addition, I initially signed on for the 3-for-free deal, so I'd imagine those sites were put on a more outdated server considering it was for free.

But I've never had any problems with any large site outages, or my sites not loading up in a few seconds TOPS on cable internet.

I'm starting to get this point. I'm thinking about this not because I have a ton of traffic, but because I have a minimum of patience with recurring problems. It just takes up too much of my time.

The trouble with shared hosting accounts is it's just so easy for the host to blame the other users, rather than accept that it's the host's responsibility to manage the server, and deal decisively with problems, and problem users.

If I was on a server by myself, the host would have no one to blame, unless it was me, and then I could be in charge of the solution.

It's challenging shopping because for any host you can find a bunch of happy people, and unhappy ones too.

Phil,

I've been playing around with a TON (okay, a dozen or so) of hosts over the past 6 months.

The best recommendations I can give you from my research are:

For Virtual Private Servers (VPS)
1. LiquidWeb.com
2. PowerVPS.com

For Shared/Reseller/Multi-Domain hosting:
1. Site5.com
2. Deasoft.com

LiquidWeb is probably my top overall choice - though at $60US a month, they are far from the cheapest option. Their uptime is nearly perfect, excellent communication, and most issues are handled within minutes.

If your empire continues to grow, they offer dedicated hosting at competitive prices, so you can make the transition very easily.

If that's too pricey, Site5 provides excellent service too, at a price that can't be beat for the space you get.

Hope this helps!
~Mike

Hey Mike,

It does help, thanks much. I'm starting with LiquidWeb.com, your top pick, and my first impressions are positive. I've learned the price of a hosting account is not important compared to reliability. You know, I spend hundreds of dollars of time over the last month doing my host's job for them etc...

Yes, a good friend uses Site5, and he is quite happy. I've seen some complaint threads too, but by itself that doesn't mean a lot.

VPS might be a good move for me, I'll learn more.

Thanks again, much appreciated.

Yes, me too. But I've also found that reliability and support levels do not automatically rise with price.

Trusted recommendation is the best bet until personal experience can answer the question properly.

Mike or Phil or anybody...

Do you know of anyone who hosts "many" (think hundreds) of very small sites (including redirected domains) with Site5?

I have about 700 domains hosted on one account, but things are not what I'd like. Site5 looks a possibility, but the grass is always greener...

Simple virtual hosting (with good stats) is fine, as long as each domain appears to stand alone in the client browser. With these domains, one (or close IPs) is OK, since SEO is not the issue.

This is a holding bank for redirects and mini sites fed mainly by PPC.

Thanks,
Charlie.

Charlie,

I just spent the afternoon trying to get up on Site5. They are a total disaster. First I was unable to log into my account with the default username/password they provided. Then they changed my username/password again as a response to my complaint but this one failed as welll.

Then I discovered that they had sent another username/password at the end of a billing confirmation email. This allowed me into my control panel but was unable to change the password, as they recommended. Finally, I was unable to publish to their temp location (pending DNS relocation).

I?ve sent numerous requests to support, billing, sales, and the CEO and as yet have received a response. When I log unto live chat they tell me they can?t help me. There is a toll-free number that goes to voice mail but directs all tech questions to the knowledge base?which does not exist.

Of all the web hosting companies I have used these people are hands-down the worst.

Dennis

My short time at LiquidWeb has been A-OK so far.

Some minor setup problems, which were dealt with quite quickly. Don't tell anybody, but I was actually happy to have a few initial problems, as it gave me a chance to taste the support response. I'm happy with it.

Charlie, hmm, I don't envy you the job of moving 700 domains to anywhere. Sad

You might ask whatever host you choose if they can move them for you. I'm not sure about this, but I think WebHost Manager, a very common control panel, has the ability to import accounts from WHM on other servers.

6 weeks after my initial post above, Micfo continues it's ongoing descent in to the sewer line. It's been a strange experience to watch someone needlessly trash their own company, what a waste... A big announcement was supposedly scheduled for today, but never materialized.

Not exactly good news, but thanks for your post Dennis.

It's a shame, since I've been hearing good things from various people re Site5. I had hoped to try them, and still might...

If you don't mind me asking, do you often have trouble with support?

Personally, I do, and at times I've wondered if I bring it on myself, in some way. I always seem to find trouble where no one else claims to. Is this the same with you?

Phil Tanny wrote:

No. Thankfully, though, these are all either very small or simple redirects. We're not talking full blown content sites. The various "proper" domains are hosted elsewhere. That said, moving is pretty much as hard for one page as it is 1000.

In this case, it's a mixed blessing. Many aren't even indexed (as I have done absolutely nothing to promote them and there aren't any incoming links whatsoever), so traffic is very low - direct type, robots and whois in many cases.

But the fact that the traffic (and revenue) is low, makes me put up with downtime from the existing host (more than I otherwise would). I certainly won't be moving them anywhere en bloc, but in stages...

When it comes to web hosts, the grass really is greener on the other side of the fence (server).

Cheers,
Charlie.

I think many hosting companies make the logical calculation that it's easier to bring in a new inexperienced user (somebody who won't even know when their site goes down) than it is to keep a customer who expects to actually receive the service being advertised.

They build the user base fast with flashy ads etc, and then sell out, and start again under a new name.

I doubt you bring it on yourself, but like me, you may be trying to hang on to an earlier era.
