Hi,

I'm currently at a cross road and I hope you folks can help me.

The site I'm running has about a 150 content pages but not as much traffic yet as I wish for.

With my current schedule I am able to writle 5 new articles per week, but I don't know if I should add those articles to my site or if I should submit them to article directories for the backlinks I gain that way.

(Buying articles is out of the question for now)

Does anybody know where I will make the most use of my articles? On my site or in the article directories?

Thanks.

Here's a few ideas for you...

Generally, I wouldn't circulate articles you host yourself. Consider splitting articles into two parts, and host them on two separate pages on your sites, linking part 2 from part one.

Then circulate just part 1, but include a link to part 2 (on your site) in the sig.

If you want to take this further, you could even provide part 2 by email, by linking from part one to a an email subs form page.

If you have 150 pages of content on your site, it looks as though it might be a good time to start driving more traffic by linking to this existing content. The trick will be strong headlines and teasing/inviting sigs.

Hopefully, this is food for thought.

Cheers,
Charlie.

Thanks Charlie,

I never would have thought of splitting the articles into two parts. Sounds great and I can easily create "Part 1-articles" and link them to articles that are already on my site.

Hi,

I find Charlie's advice fabulous. Hadn't thought about dividing the articles in to two parts myself. I also do article distributing myself and have had great success. However I think the articles I syndicate are too short (500 words, written by pro authors) to divide into two parts, so what I do is syndicate them to about 30-40 article banks with a backlink to my websites.

In my opinion 150 pages is good enough content, I would concentrate on getting links instead of making the site bigger. Roiight now I have a website that has 90 pages, 6 distributed articles and 8 reciprocal links. It also has about 30 niche directory submissions. Gets around 200-250 visitors a day. Although not that impressive, it does add up if you have lots of lites performing in a similar way. Well, sorry I got off topic lol. Happy article distributing!

Johnny,

Charlie offers a great tip. With 150 articles going I would consider starting a blog and posting snippets to the blog directing people to areas of interest. Look at getting the blog syndicated to create more inbound inks.

DO NOT BLOG and PING. Just post once or twice a day.

I'm ading blogs to all my sites. Good results!

Step back and read Allan's news letter #267 on Jason. Look at his blogs - What can we learn from them?

I have 4 sites I started 2 months ago and post daily. All have good indexing and traffic.

Using the directories is great take 2 articles and put them out at the articles directories. Keep the rest for yourself - You need the content on your site!

Think PUBLISHING not SITE BUILDING!

I like Charlies idea. Another variation would be to write 2-part articles. This could work if you could manage to write 6 articles a week instead of 5... or just write two 2-part articles and then a third single article.

This would give you several pages of content on your site each week, as well as several new inbound links. I also like this idea because it forces you to link to internal pages on your site (or get incoming links to your internal pages, from very relevant internal pages on other domains), instead of just the main page... which is a big plus in your overall SEO plan.

Your Link Strategy is very important, directly related to your rankings - and of course, your traffic potential. At the same time, more content (ie more pages) gives you more opportunities for top ten rankings... also increasing your traffic potential.

Great thread!

Thanks for the tip Gary.

Do you mean that I should link relevant blog posts to related articles on my site?

I would. Write a short summary and post ---> read more...

Allan's newsletter is a get lesson in how to do it. Instead of a newsletter do it in the blog.

All the Best,

Gary

Just for the record, this idea wasn't originally mine. Not quite...

I'm 99% sure I got it from Paul Myers (TalkBiz.com), but I'm not sure where he got it from! Wink

Glad you like the idea: it does work, too. But I think it's only fair to pass on the credit in this case. Smile

Cheers,
Charlie.

That's a great idea that I'd never thought of either. I'm new and a little confused on one thing, though - How do visitors on your site read the 1st part of the article? I'm guessing I wouldn't want to post it on the site and submit because of duplicate content penalties, so do you guys just write Part 2 so it can stand alone on the site?

I host both parts on my own site.

I'm never quite sure what to make of the so-called "duplicate content penalties". To play it safe, I usually add an extra paragraph (often an introduction) to part 1 (that isn't in the distributed article) for peace of mind.

I can't say I've noticed any penalties myself, but I haven't exactly looked for them.

Cheers,
Charlie.

Cool - thanks for the quick reply, Charlie.

I was thinking of doing some minor rewrites just to change the content around. I think I'll do that along with adding an extra paragraph here & there.

This is great information!

I am not new to the internet but I am new to publishing articles like you are taking about. I understand the part about breaking the articles into two pieces but I am not clear on where you are posting the second half of the article. Blog's, directories, etc.?

Your feedback is appreciated!
Thanks.

Anywhere you control, so you can steer the visitor to the action page of your choice. Definitely not another article directory.

Paul Myers originally suggested posting part two by email, but you have to balance up whether it's better to have a lower number of obviously interested visitors (who have signed up) or a larger number of vaguer window shoppers...

It all comes down to the sort of site you have and how good you are at converting on the spot - this includes the sign up page. Results will vary greatly depending on your niche, too.

Why not try a split test between an email sign up page and using part 2 as the landing page. See how far you can track the vistors from part 1 through your site.

Hope this helps,
Charlie.

Another way of looking at the article in the article directory is as a teaser or preseller. By giving them just enough information to make them want to read Part 2. How you actually deliver them to your landing page or autoresponder is the most important aspect.
