Hi,

How do some websites hide or lock their view source? It seems that most are visible. Does it really help to keep competition away? I guess anyone can really go through a website and check the file names anyway for your keywords.

Any information or advice would be appreciated.
Thank you
Tina

The only efffective way to keep source code secret is by using IP Delivery (cloaking). This is expensive and complicated - and will get you into big trouble unless done properly.

The other ways people try to hide source code (such as disabling right click) or encoding the source as ASCII are easily worked around by anyone with the slightest technical knpwledge. In my opinion, they are not worth the effort.

Disabling the right click also risks alienating visitors.

Yes, they can, but the real reason most people try to hide their source is to stop others copying other on-page elements such as how the page is compiled (for the SEs), rather than how it looks (to a human).

When it comes to keywords chosen, it's more a question of how they're employed, than what they are. Also, off-page factors such as linking structures are becoming ever more dominant, these days. As a result, there is now software that can reverse-engineer the complete external linking structure for a given site.

Your competitors will usually be able to see how you are succeeding, if they are desperate enough. Everything considered, I suggest you concentrate on creating web sites without worrying too much about what you can't really control. Smile

Hope this helps,
Charlie.
