|

Hi all,
I was wondering if anyone knew how to make the small icon that appears in the url on some sites. Like the small blue and white AP icon that appears above all Associate Programs pages. I think this would be a good tool to help seperate you from others when people save your site on their favorites.

igezeum, its actually quite easy.
1. Find or create an icon to use as your favorite.
2. Save it as "favicon.ico"
3. Upload it to the root directory of your domain
To test it, just add the site to your favorites, then close the browser and open it again. Now check your Favorites and the icon should be there.
I added a favorite icon to my 'Saving Money' site in my sig if you want to see it in action.
I think its worth the effort. Takes only 5 minutes to do and helps distinguish your site from all the others clogging everyone's Favorites folder. _________________ Web Host Reviews

Thanks Mike929
For some reason I can't get the icon to work, is there a specific program that you made the icon in?

I didn't make the icon myself, I downloaded it from a free icon site. If you search for 'free icons' you'll find all sorts of icons for no charge.
I'm not sure if there is an extra step if you make it yourself. Perhaps a step that was already done before I downloaded it? _________________ Web Host Reviews

Usually favicon is in .ico format. (16x16 pixels size). Or could be bigger like 32x32.
put it under your web site root.
Add <link> tag in your <head> section.
see the following tutorial, you will should be fine.

To create my favicon for our website I used Adobe Photoshop, I found a very helpful website with a good tutorial, unfortunately I can't remember the address. For Photoshop you need an ICON creator plugin. Once that is installed all you need to do is FILE - SAVE AS - then choose save as .ICO.
Hope that helps.

thats the line you're suppose to have in the header:
<link rel="shortcut icon" type="image/x-icon" href="[path to favicon.ico]"> _________________ Dondor,

I don't quite understand the ICO format -- it's not a usual picture, because in one file there are several images of different size -- 16x16, 32x32 and 48x48.
And I didn't succeed in creating favicon.ico in Photoshop -- itsn't not shown _________________ Phone verification Services by Phone confirm. |

This web site has its favicon image located here: http://www.associateprograms.com/favicon.ico.
If you load that link in Firefox, you'll notice this in your browser's title bar: favicon.ico (BMP Image, 16x16 pixels)
You can create a BMP in Paint, located in the "Accessories" folder of the Programs folder in your Start menu, if you're using Windows. Maybe I got the exact location wrong... it's been a while since I've used Windows
You can also create a BMP in GraphicConverter if you're using OS X, or the GIMP in Linux/Windows/OS X.
Hope this helps.

Thanks, Allan! We're currently working on a series of updates, so stay tuned in the next few months because there's going to be some big changes.
