Guys,
Ive been an observer here for a long time and havent made many posts,
but i have created an IT/computer related site that is starting to do well. I wont post the url here because I dont want the copycatters ripping me off.
ANYWAY...
I have traded about 100 links, but only 20 of them are with similar themed sites ,
the rest are non themed shopping sites/fitness sites/travel etc etc.
1) am i affecting my search ranking by having those other 80 non themed links?
some help please folks
Fred
2) should i now remove those 80 non themed links?
Keeping links "on theme" does several things, it helps your ranking and the linked site ranking more than off theme links.
I think the general consensus is, whoever links to you is great, but don't dilute your theme by linking to just anyone. If you link to off topic sites, make sure their links are segregated on a separate page from the on topic links. You should give prominence to on topic.
One of the biggest concerns with a lot of links to off topic sites is the fear that Google will perceive your site as a link farm. I don't know that 100 links would get you there, but it is something to be aware of.
As a side note, when you set up your link pages, do keep the maximum number of links to less than 50 (including your own navigation links). Most SE's, and Google in particular, won't follow anything over 100 per page, and when you hit close to that number that "link farm" smell may start to generate

Debs is right in keeping your links on theme. Search engines rank your site on 3 levels.
1. How many sites are linked to yours
2. The relavence of each site linked to yours (Theme)
3. The Page Rank of each site linked to yours
If I could give you some advice on your link campiagn it would be this. Don't concern yourself too much with Search Engine Rank. Only 15% of all traffic worldwide is produced by search engines. While 80% of all traffic worldwide is produced through reciprocal links.
Shari Thurow, author of the Search Engine Visibility book says, "For your link development campaigns, quit looking at PageRank. I believe it is very narrow-minded to measure the success of a link development campaign based on a number between 1 and 10. Suppose a site has a PageRank of 5. The site gets 100 legitimate additional links pointing to it. Am I going to be upset because the site still has a PageRank of 5? No, because the site has 100 more legitimate links pointing to it! That means that the site is easier to find than it was previously, regardless of PageRank. Link development is supposed to be for your end users, not for the search engines. The search engines are not going to spend thousands or millions of dollars on your products / services - your end users will. When I create a link development campaign, I create one that end users will appreciate.
Suppose I am marketing a site about a lactose intolerance and my client site has a milk-free recipe section. I am going to market that site to with nutritional newsletter sites, education sites, health-related sites, etc. Some of those sites might have a low PageRank, but so what! These sites are likely places that will attract my client's target audience. Some of these sites might not even be search-engine friendly (meaning that Google is unable to crawl them). Link development, first and foremost, should always be for humans first.
To rely on a number between 1 and 10 for a link development campaign is a mistake. A page can have a PageRank of zero and help generate thousands of qualified leads. A page can have a PageRank of 10 and help generate zero leads. Always look at the big picture."
Good Luck,

Just a comment on that. If I could get a PR 10 page to link to me, I could get 30 000+ visitors per day from the search engines. If the site linking to me didn't send me any leads, it wouldn't bother me too much.
Looking for quality links that can send targeted traffic is important but also looking for quality links that will make the search engines send you more traffic is just as important - in most cases, it's more important.
I have a site that has 55 000 links pointing to it (according to AllTheWeb) - Google is by far the biggest source of traffic followed by Yahoo and MSN.
