I'm thinking about adding a subdomain(s) to my main site, but I need to know how search engine treats subdomains.
Does it treat it just like main domain?
If your site is about pet shop and your subdomain is about giftshop and you can see these two sites are completely unrelated, how do you think SE will treat the subdomain?
I appreciate your help.
Thank you.

I'm no expert on sub-domains, but I've noticed that Google seems to treat them as though they are separate domains.
Normally, for one site, you can achieve a maximum of 2 top 10 listings in Google. However, if your site has sub-domains, it's possible to get 5, 6, or maybe even more top 10 listings for a particular phrase.
There's no guarante this situation will continue, of course.
One thing bothers me about the idea of having sub-domains covering totally unrelated topics. You must provide links to those sub-domains. So you'll have links on pages that are totally unrelated to the topic of the page.
For example, a page all about yellow boxes might contain a link to your green grocers sub-domain and another link to your purple placements sub-domain. If you do that, you risk confusing the search engines.
I think separate sites for separate topics would be a better way to go. _________________ Allan Gardyne

Hi,
Stupid question perhaps, but what do you mean with a "subdomain". Is this a new A host like "www.mysite.com", "shop.mysite.com" etc. Or a completely new domain? The latter meaning that "www.mydomain.com" is linked to "www.myotherdomain.com"

"shop.example.com" is a sub-domain of "example.com". _________________ Allan Gardyne

Allan,
Thank you for your help. The main reason why I wanted to have subdomains is to save the cost of a hosting site. I want to build sites using data feeds and if I build 10 sites this month with all different topics and different sites, then it would cost me anywhere between $500-1000 to start since most of the web hosting companies require you to pay a yearly fee.
But I may still try a subdomain for a related topic.

Coffee... Search some of the web hostings listed here. There are several that charge a single monthly (or yearly) fee, and allow multiple top level domains. _________________ Eric D. Burdo

I do all my website hosting through iPowerWeb and Startlogic. iPowerWeb give me 5 free subdomains and I can change them anytime without being charged. Startlogic charges $10 per subdomain and gives you none for free.
If I know for a fact I will never want to create subdomains, I go with Startlogic because they run specials almost every weekend. So you can get everything for around $70 for the first year. I choose iPower if I know I will want subdomains. They charge around $95 for the first year of hosting but I get pretty much 6 domain names. _________________ Sincerely,

I too share Coffee?s concern. Apparently, it?s advantageous to produce many smaller tight-focused sites than one larger site with diverse content. However, I have used a redirect page in the past and wonder if that will throw off the search engines.
