Dave, sorry, probably didn't explain that well.

Urchin is the name of a leading web site statistics program.

It tells you how many people visited your site, where they came from, what browser they use, how they traveled your site and stuff like that. Any host will have some kind of stats, Urchin stats are very well done stats. Comprehensive, but still easy to read.

Stats are not the kind of thing you need to be learning all about right now, so I hope we don't distract you by bringing it up.

For now, it's much better to be focused on writing articles, articles, articles so that you will have some stats to enjoy. Smile

Excessive stats monitoring can kill the excitement and motivation of getting started. I think Phil is right. Just worry about getting content and traffic for now... check your stats on occasion to see if your improving, but don't worry about much of it now.

At around 2-3 months, you can start checking again and see how things are building. And you can start checking your refereral logs to pick up some extra keywords to write articles about.

And about two or three years down the track, when you get really serious, you'll probably wish you a comprehensive tracking system.

Some people add it later. Some people get it right from the start by being fortunate enough to choose a web host that provides it.

Yes, this little exchange serves as a good example of what I was ranting against in a related thread about helping newbies etc.

Watch how I did just what I was ranting against.

Newbie asks a simple question.

Out of the best of intentions we (me in this case) start firing off various kinds of information that would be helpful to some, but is mostly a distraction to the newbie.

The newbie is channeled in to thinking that what they need is as much info as possible. So they start visiting other forums, asking other questions, and helpful folks (and those with stuff to sell) start pummeling the newbie with 28,000 options.

Before long the newcomers head is bursting with all kinds of fragmentary info they aren't in a position to actually use, and the task before them starts to look overwhelming. Their mind is trying to understand an entire industry before they even know how to make a web page. Analysis paralysis starts setting in, and so on. Most of us have been there.

We use the information firehose technique to help the newcomers, when we should be using the divide and conquer technique.

Hi all,

I am posting to let you know that we have uploaded our latest update on our progress (link below). You can read about how we earned our very first commission thanks to a member of this forum who recommended we put Adsense on our blog.

While making the post I just noticed that it is nearly one month since I made the initial post in this thread. I would just like to say thanks to those that have helped with your encouraging words and your suggestions over the past 4 weeks.

Dave Snr.

Congrats on your first commission Dave and Dave. And welcome to Micfo. CPanel is wonderful, but be careful, there are a lot of distracting gizmos in there. Smile It sounds like you guys are moving ahead with determination.

I wanted to tell you that your posts and stories are helping me launch a project here as well. The inspiration and assistance is running both ways.

As ranted earlier, I have an interest in a "less is more" web publishing system that boils both the tech and marketing side down to the essential essence. Your posts have helped bring these thoughts to the forefront here.

I'm most qualified to work on the tech side so I've begun coding a blog/site publishing tool that aims to implement the less is more philosophy on the tech side.

So far the system allows me to create and edit web pages/blog posts using a form with only 4 fields. The navigation system and site map for the site/blog are auto created. Write your article, hit submit, write another article etc.

Anyway, thanks for the inspiration that helped me bring these ideas in to focus, and on to the drawing board.

I think this tool will be a help to me as well, as it should help me set aside fiddling with tech stuff and focus on text content sometimes.

I'm using my tech skills to create a tool whose whole purpose is to shield me and other users from tech issues, and I will most likely use the tool to write about tech stuff.

Huh? Wadhesay? Smile

Phil,

I'm glad the inspiration is running both ways. Whether you know it or not you have given us great encouragement so it's good to know you are getting something out of this as well.

Good luck with your "less is more" concept. I am a 'techie' myself and can be drawn into figuring how things work as opposed to letting them get on with it!

While I have limited experience it seems to be an excellent idea. Let us know how get on.

Dave

Ya, no kidding. Sounds so familiar. How do you think I got so interested in less is more? Smile

Thank you for the great thread and inspiration. My father was injured on his construction job a few years ago and collects L&I checks now because he cant work, and my mother baby-sits. This thread has encouraged me to get off my ass and actually get started helping my folks earn more money. I have been planning for the past month or two to jump into the affiliate website industry for not only myself but like I said, for my parents too. I am 23yo and have enjoyed your father/son blog very much. I hope to do the same with my father.

On a other note, I saw the mention of Urchin stats in this thread and my host has Webalizer and Modlogan stats for all my sites. I am wondering how these stats programs compare to Urchin? Should I be looking for someone who uses Urchin? Or is Modlogan and Webalizer good enough? Thank you for your opinions.

-Sean

Good luck Sean. Making someone you love part of your motivation sounds like a great plan. And doing it together with your Dad sounds even better. Got a trend started here! Smile

No need to drop everything and work on this. Lots of more important things to do first. Once you have a site, and some traffic, then maybe it would be time to look for Urchin. I think maybe I mentioned above you can get it at micfo.com, and a number of other hosts.

Sorry, I can't compare to the other stats programs you mentioned.

OK, here goes, my Dad net story.

During the peak of his career my Dad worked at NASA in the middle of the moon launch era. It was a very exciting for him being part of such a historic event, and he had a front row seat of sorts.

Later in his life he would up in an environment that was much more limiting intellectually, and it was frustrating for him.

When WebTV came out my sister and I got it for him for Christmas one year. At first he was hesitant, because he associated computers and the Net with NASA scientists, which he was not.

About 15 minutes after we opened the box he took the keyboard from my hands, and didn't give it back for 5 years.

He went wild on the Net, making friends all over the globe, and had the time of his life.

Before he died he told me WebTV added at least 5 years to his life. As you can imagine, it was very gratifying to be able to finally do something tangible for the person who had done so much for me. I was finally grown up, a circle complete.

Although he has since uploaded out of here, I still get psychic emails from him all the time. Not even death could shut him up.... Smile

Great story Phil. It goes to show how small things can make a huge difference!

I am glad our project has helped inspire you. We are just over a month into it now and while it has been great working on the project itself I can also see other benefits coming from it.

Because we are working together we are communicating more than we otherwise would have been on things that are unrelated to the project. So instead of drifting apart like so many other father/teenage son relationships do there is a greater bond growing between us.

Dave Jnr. has also begun to understand how to manage his money. It's amazing what effect the experience of 'earning' has had on him. He is much more concious of what he spends and how he spends it.

He has also been amazed by the response to our project and the support and encouragement that has come from Phil and others on this forum. At the beginning he thought the idea of the post was 'soppy' but has since changed his opinion.

For me it has given me the push to get past GO! I have had an on-off relationship with the internet since 1998 but have never managed to get as far as we have on this project.

All I can say to you is go for it! Don't leave it until it's too late. Like Phil's story the benefit won't only come in the shape of financial reward. It will have spin off benefits you won't realise until later.

Good luck

Dave

I don't know Modlogan, but I do know Urchin and Webalyzer well. Webalyzer is fine for a really top level view of your site, but you can't do detailed analysis. If all you want to know is how many people and pages you get per day or month, and what are your most popular pages and search queries, then it is good enough. But if you want to know which search engines are sending you traffic and for what search terms, or you want to really drill down into the data and look at hundreds of pages and not the top 20, then you need more. I use Urchin and recommend it. I am considering upgrading my Urchin, or moving over to NetTracker at this time.

Hi Brad, Thanks for the insights. I love Urchin tracking. In what ways is NetTracker better than Urchin?
