The more time people spend at your web site, the
more time you'll have to persuade them to buy your
product or service. Below are ten powerful ways to
keep visitors at your web site longer.

1. Provide your web site visitors with content they
can't read anywhere else. People will stay longer at
your web site to read the original content.

2. Remind your web site visitors they can print out
your content. They may browse around your online
store while it's printing.

3. Offer your web site visitors a freebie if they take
the time to fill out your online survey. They'll be at
the site longer and might buy something afterwards.

4. Offer your visitors free software that they can
download right from your web site. While they are
waiting they might read your ad.

5. Provide a huge online directory of information
that your visitors could search. The directory must
contain information your visitors would want.

6. Make sure all your web pages load fast or your
visitors will leave fast. Time is precious; they won't
waste it waiting for your site to load.

7. Tell your visitors what's offered at your web site
at the very beginning. If people are confused about
what's being offered they may leave too early.

8. Publish your web site professionally. People will
get turned off and leave if they see a lot of spelling
and grammar mistakes.

9. Make your site text easy to read. Most people
won't strain their eyes trying to read text that is too
small, light or bright.

10. Use headlines and sub headlines all over your
your web site that will grab visitors attention. It will
attract them to explore your web site longer.

Sincerely,

Anton Cheranev

My site has implemented 7 of your points, still don't keep visitors longer. Why?

That's because he has listed only a few good points.

The best ones that keep your site visitors for longer is:

1. Add content to your site that is sticky. This includes things like games, horoscopes, free email accounts, etc.

2. Get about 100 or more people to look at your site and not tell them that it is your site. See what they think and what they say about it. What ever they say about the site, take it all down and then if they found any disadvantages with it you can then improve it.

3. If you are selling products on your site, then make sure that you have a fast and good service. The quicker your customer gets their products and services the better and the more better and quicker your customer service responses are the better.

Recently I have been seeing grey colored text , 9 px font. Its very difficult to read. I changed them to big font thru browser options and had to read it.

Sameway yellow or blue text on black background... Eyes get dizzy.

Thanks for the very useful tips!!

I think I read somewhere that the best colours to use on your site are very PLAIN....red, white, blue, and black on a white background.

I've never liked a page that had too much flashy stuff on it or too many things to look at.

I've heard that popups are good, but I can't stand them myself and close them immediately without even reading them.

Thanks,
Liane Bate

Also, just be using some of the methods mentioned above, it still doesn't mean that your visitors will stay longer.

The main thing is to get targeted visitors to your site. If you have not got targeted visitors that have come to your site that is actually wanting to look at your content then they will just click off your site again.

For starters, you could change the design of your site! Your fonts turn me off and I am sure other visitors as well. Do you know how it looks like on a mac? On mozilla? On Opera? Do you know how it looks like on different screen resolution?

Seriously, the longest time I stay on a site is when watching a video tutorial.

I wasn't a big fan of video until just recently when I realized I watched a 20 minute tutorial of a video from a guy I didn't even care for and a product I really didn't think was any good. I just got engaged in his presentation and watched the whole thing. I then realized how powerful this can be to keep a visitor at your site.

Downside of this is without a fast connection, you are not hitting all of your market.

Just my .02.

Those are some good tips for keeping your visitors to stay longer. I have found one of the best ways to get your visitors to come back to your site is to offer free email accounts. On one of my websites I offer free email accounts from everyone.net. I'm not sure if they still offer this free service, if not, there are other sites that do. You can customize the signature that goes out on all these emails. So, I get free advertising for my website everytime someone sends an email. It's a win, win situation. Your visitor gets a free account with your domain [example ***@yourdomain.com] and you get free advertisement as well as your visitors coming back to your site frequently.

Good SOLID points Anton. Especially if the copy-paste thinking fraternity reads between the lines and understand the fundamental logic underlying.

Check your traffic logs for the pages that are most visited and concentrate on optimizing those pages for your visitors. On them, include several internal links to other relevant pages on your site.

Have prominent links on each page linking to your index page.

If you've just added a new article, mark it as "new" so return visitors will know that they haven't yet read it. Also, it shows any visitor, old or new, that you update your site.

Another easy easy thing to do is add an "email this page to friend" link or box.

It may not keep them longer but it can bring new or returing traffic to a site.

Good post Anton. One thing that helped me is trying to have all of the links on a page point to other links of just mine. Make every link lead to another of your pages or site. Build you own web that weaves all of your pages and even other sites together.

The only exception for me would be Google Ads or maybe an affiliate program and alot of time I would build a review page before sending someone directly to my affiliate sales page.
