One particular post of mine at my blog has been collecting lots of spam up until now. While the post was made in early May, and since I forward all comments to my mailbox, I get plenty of sickening spams as a result of the comments posted in that particular post. Wonder why.

The last time I checked it had 604 comments - all whopping spams. Any idea on what have I possibly done to make that happen (bsides the possiblity of something I did in my past lifetime)?

The only clue I can think of was the time I registered for the feeds.

Are you advertisng it in 'bad neighborhoods'? Also you need to remove the email address from your signature file. You are a walking spam magnet!

I did just that. I did some changes to my e-mail address if you would notice my signature. Think that would help? I've seen other people do that so I think that should work.

By the way, what is your definition of 'bad neighbourhood'? If you don't mind explaining, I'd like to know what it is!

Blog spammers scrap sites and then spam those blogs. It has nothing to do with 'bad neighborhoods' or who you're linking to.

What can you do?

Well, you can turn off your comments for one. If you want to keep them on, you can set up a CAPTCHA before people sign in.

Also, depending on the blog software you have, some people have written scripts to combat blog spam.

Thanks Voasi - I am not that well up on blog spamming techniques. I have had a minor foray into the world of blogging and haven't really experienced blog spamming to that degree.

How do that many spammers find the blog in the first place and is there some kind of automated software spammers are using to submit posts to multiple blogs?

It just seems a rather pointless exercise spamming a blog?

Makes me wonder. My blog was rather new then but only one post accumulated all the sickening spams. I dare not think about it - it might have exceeded 8,00 comments by now.

Anyway, I'll try CAPTCHA.

P.S. Cloak, I have removed your address from the testimonials page.

What was the post in question and was the spam for adult sites?

I tried to click the link in your sig file and got a "Page cannot be displayed"

Yes, it is automated software. Smart spammers will go after blogs that have just a couple of posts and that months old. Why? Well, less chance of the blog being an active blog and the link not being removed.

Do blogs get indexed by the search engines? Yes. Do blog spammers add links within the comments? Yes. Do incoming links to a site drive the site/page higher in the search engines? Yes.

I checked the link and it is still okay.

You can try another link: http://ebizmodelsyoucancopy.blogspot.com/

Yes, my blog is still new, about a month old. It's not on Google search engine yet.

The post was another regular one about Internet Business. All the SPAMs have to do with making money, and link-a-lot.com.

I have deleted that particular post and it probably won't happen again, at least not too soon. Odd, it was the only one collecting the SPAMs. Some people on Earth can be actually that sickening.

You mean sickening like how we were posting at 4:30AM this morning? Wink

Anyway, I'm sorry to hear about your blog being spammed. I'm trying to start a new one too, but I guess that will not be spammed because it's about Photoshop and graphic stuff.

However, I'll take the safety measure and turn comments off... Cool

Hydrospell, it's more sickening than us posting at 4.30 a.m. because it seems that the SPAM were automated that the bums don't need to be around at an unearthly hour to do it.

I have taken care of the problem. Fortunately, it was only one of my post that collected the 909 comments (the last figure I saw before deleting and re-posting it).

You can turn the comments off but since they don't happen anymore and think it's a rare case (I have never heard of blog spam until I got one myself), you can leave it on maybe - just be careful lol

You'd be surprised that you will get spammed no matter what the subject of your blog is. I now have very, very old blogs and guestbooks (3-5 years old lol) I don't update anymore becoming a SPAM collection of adult and solicited marketing ads that you don't need to hire a copywriter Razz.

I've a brainwave:

Why don't we collect these SPAM ads, strip out their sales copy and compile them into a big database of salesletters? Then we can hire a college student to make another salesletter generator application and we can sell it for $!

Ain't it brilliant! Wink

Some brainwave you have. I actually have a habit of collecting scams and spams that make me laugh occassionally e.g. the $6 money-making chain letter, some Nigerian Scam in disguise whereby the author claimed he was a rich business man but fell victim to the Indonesian Tsunami and wanted to will US$9.5 million to me. lol
