I'm a Registered Nurse and an Apheresis Specialist.

Someone's life depends on it!

What's apheresis? That's the process of removing platelets from a donor's blood, and returning the rest of the blood to the donor. The platelets are then given to people who are in desperate need of them. By the way, platelets help your blood to clot so that you don't bleed to death. Sorry to be so blunt, but it's the truth.

Donor platelets are vitally important to the health of many, many people. However, finding donors is always a challenge.

I encourage EVERYONE, and yes that means EVERYONE - to go to your local blood bank, TODAY, ask for the apheresis department, get a platelet count and see if you qualify as a donor.

There are some people that have specific antigens on their platelets that are in high demand. The blood bank will be able to determine this - you may not have to donate that often because they may use you only in those 'extreme' cases.

Donating is always a choice. You may receive calls asking for you to come in to donate. You get to choose. Just remember, if there were no need, you wouldn't be called. Someone in your community or your country DEPENDS on your generosity.

Give the gift of life. Give blood.
