Tiny steps to success

In the 10 years that I've been doing affiliate marketing full-time, the most powerful business lesson I've learned is that tiny, continuous improvements - tiny steps to success - eventually lead to dramatically high profits.

I first learned this lesson from multi-millionaire John Audette.

When John was building his Internet business, each night before he went to bed, he'd ask himself, "What did I do today to improve my business?"

If he hadn't done anything that day to improve his business, he'd go back downstairs and do something useful - no matter how small.

This article - the first in a series - is aimed at affiliates who are making less than about $1,000 a month. I'm going to show you how to take tiny steps to success to improve your affiliate business. I suggest you set a goal of making an extra $33,000 a year.

I chose the $33,000 a year goal because I want it to be low enough for you to BELIEVE with all your heart that you can achieve it.

You don't have to be brilliant to make a living at affiliate marketing. What you DO have to do is focus on doing the things that earn you commissions. Also, if you keep improving your affiliate business every day, you'll eventually succeed. It may take a while, but if you always keep improving, success is inevitable.

The concept of continuous improvement isn't new. The Japanese call constant improvement "kaizen", Tony Robbins calls it "constant and never-ending improvement". Others have called it the "cumulative effect" and "incremental improvement" or "incremental success". John Reese says: "You must do something every single day towards accomplishing your goal."

Incremental success - tiny steps to success - is a popular concept because it's so powerful. This series of articles was inspired by a report Paul Myers wrote on the topic. He was writing about Internet marketing in general. In this series, I'll be giving specific tips aimed at affiliate marketers.

Here's an example of incremental progress...

Imagine you do something every day to improve your daily affiliate income by a mere 25 cents. Keep doing that - improving your income by just 25 cents - every day for a year. At the end of the year, you'll be earning an extra $91.50 a day.

Those tiny, continuous improvements have pushed your annual income rate up by $33,000.

The first time I saw the enormous power of continuous improvements explained, I found it hard to believe that the figures were correct, so I worked out the calculations for myself. They're correct.

See below the cumulative effect of tiny daily improvements - tiny steps to success.

Here's how your extra daily income will rise if you keep increasing it by just 25 cents a day...

$91.25 x 365 = $33,306.25 extra a year

By the end of the year, you're earning an extra $91.25 a day, so you're earning at an annual rate of $33,306.25 extra a year.

Of course, your affiliate income won't increase by exactly 25 cents every day. You'll have leaps and bounds and quiet patches. The important thing is to always keep improving what you're doing, so that the average daily increase is at least the 25 cents you're aiming for.

Are you feeling more optimistic?

If your target is 50 cents more each day, your extra earnings shoot up by $66,795 a year.

If you can consistently push up your average daily earnings by $1, you can jump to an extra $133,225 a year.

That's the enormous power of continuous improvement.

So, do what multi-millionaire John Audette did. Do something every day to improve your business.

Make continuous improvement a habit

Make a note in your diary, put a sticky note on your computer screen, use a reminder pop-up, leave a note on your pillow... do whatever works for YOU to ensure that every single day you do some small thing that improves your business. Better still, do a LARGE thing that improves your business a LOT, but at the very least, always do SOMETHING, every day.

I've read that it takes about 21 days to form a habit. (For me, it seems to take a bit longer.) So force yourself to do this every day for a month. After that time, you won't have to force yourself.

After a month or so, one day it will occur to you that you're now always automatically looking for ways to improve your affiliate business. It won't be a struggle any more, you'll just do it. Making continuous improvements has become a habit.

When you sit down at your computer, you probably start the day by answering a few emails, reading a few newsletters, perhaps checking out a favorite blog... You have a break, have a cup of coffee and read a few more emails... If you're not careful, hours can slip by and you haven't actually done anything productive.

If that sounds like you, stop it.

You CAN change your habits. You CAN teach yourself how to be successful.

Try this

I urge you to create a new habit. BEFORE you check emails or anything else, DO the most important money-generating task on your list. Even the so-called "urgent" emails can wait. It's YOUR business. YOU make the rules. Don't let other people's emails be your boss. Start every day by doing something that improves your business.

(Always prepare a to-do list of 5 or 6 items the night before so that in the morning you don't have to puzzle over which task to do first. If you put yourself in a position where you have to make a decision first thing, you may be tempted to do nothing or do something easier instead, such as clicking on your email icon. So go easy on yourself - make the decisions the night before.)

When you start work for the day, always start by doing something that improves your business. Accomplishing this task this will give you a glorious feeling of satisfaction, of progress being made, which will put you in a positive mood for the rest of the day.

Try this every day for a month. You'll form an extremely powerful new habit. Focus on doing things that increase your affiliate commissions. Keep doing it, day after day, month after month.

In this series, I'll describe specific steps you can take to improve your affiliate income. You have do your part. You have to work along with me, improving your business every day. Once you've formed a new habit, this will become easy.

After a year of making tiny improvements, you'll have improved your income dramatically and built a powerful base from which you can grow.

You'll probably find that progress is slow to start with. You may hit a brick wall at some stage where you need a lot of determination to keep going, to keep believing that lots of tiny steps to success will inevitably lead to massive success.

However, you may also discover, as I did, that at a certain magical stage your affiliate business takes off and grows exponentially - much faster than you'd ever imagined it would.

Make no mistake - tiny improvements DO lead to huge improvements in income. I can't guarantee what results YOU will get. No one can do that. However, if you keep improving what you're doing, success IS inevitable.

Massive action

You may have read the advice: "If you want massive success, take massive action." That's excellent advice, but you need time and energy to take massive action.

If you already have a full-time job and other commitments, you may not have the time to do anything massive right now. Instead, you can succeed by making tiny continuous improvements which in total add up to massive action.

Steps to take right now...

1. Think about WHY you want to earn an extra $33,000 a year. Is it to pay your mortgage? Buy a new car? Have an overseas vacation? Pay off debts? Be your own boss? Help your parents? Invest in a college fund? Invest for an early retirement? It's really important that you picture yourself having the extra income and doing something specific with it. Whenever you need motivation, think about WHY you're doing this.

2. Add up last month's affiliate commissions. Work out what your daily affiliate income is.

3. Set a goal now for the extra daily income level you plan to achieve 12 months from now. I'm suggesting $91.25 extra ($33,000 a year) but what you choose is up to you.

4. Set up a simple system for keeping a record of your income and comparing it with your goal income. Place this note somewhere you will SEE it, such as on the wall in front of your desk. On the first day of each month, calculate your daily income for the previous month and compare it with your goal figure. You can use my calculations above to see if you're on target each month. Calculating the figure monthly allows time for natural ups and downs to even out.

Is your instruction manual gathering dust?

If you've read this far, you're serious about affiliate marketing, so you probably already own a good affiliate instruction manual, such as Rosalind Gardner's Super Affiliate Handbook. It's comprehensive and written by a super affiliate who knows what she's talking about. It's a modestly priced introduction to affiliate marketing. I strongly recommend it.

If you're like most people who buy marketing ebooks, your affiliate instruction manual will be sitting virtually untouched on your hard drive.

I strongly recommend you re-read it. Don't just read it, though. Find a quiet spot, without TV or any other distractions, and STUDY it as though you're studying for an exam.

Take hand-written notes of the most important points you need to remember. The physical process of writing seems to do something that typing doesn't do. It helps imprint the message in your brain. Re-reading your own notes 24 hours later will help boost your retention rate dramatically.

Write down action steps you need to take to improve your affiliate business. Let's face it, if you're earning less than $1,000 a month, you've probably paid for lots of good advice that you're not using yet.

Free alternative: If you can't afford Rosalind's affiliate handbook, study my free, 18-step Affiliate Program Tutorial, and take notes. Also, keep reading this series of articles.

Start TODAY, right now. Set your income goal and take action. Start making tiny steps to success an everyday habit.

I look forward to hearing your success stories.

Nice post, Allan!

The "25 cents a day" chart really does a good job at striking the imagination and illustrating how constant efforts lead to greater success... (as well as maintaining manageable goals).

I will have to refer your article in a future post on our blog :)

Good work (as always) :)

This is great stuff. I have always kept with the habit of at least doing a little writing every day to help with content but I have never thought of working the financial side of things a little every day. It's like common sense when you hear it but who every really thought about it before now.
Thanks Allan, I look forward to reading the rest as they come out.

Hi Allan,
I just want to take the opportunity to express 'gratitude' for the clear information you are freely giving. I am in the process of getting a business going and it is overwhelming for the most part. It is very nice to have simple, clear steps laid out in the manner your have. I eagerly look forward to your next article.
Thanks.

This is a good article. I really agree with the concept, especially in today's more crowded affiliate world. Since there is so much competition a new online affiliate has to work hard and steady to continually improve their income. They must have patience, and they must work at it part time in the beginning until the income gets to a higher level.

I worked online part time for 11 years. Now I am actually retired from my full time job and I have a pension, so here I am finally working online every day from home. Not the typical scenario that you read about, but it is my reality nevertheless. Over a long period, my affiliate income has increased steadily much the way you have described here in the article.

Patience and dedication are necessities for success today. The stopped down economy is also now a factor that previously was not there. Lots of stumbling blocks for new affiliate marketers just working from home. This article is good, real advice that makes sense. I hate the type of ebook ad that tries to tell the buyer they will earn 6 figures monthly on autopilot.

Hi Allan,

As usual you wrote a great post. I will follow your advices, I can use it:-).

What you said about making a new habit sounds very recognizable to me, I wrote a page about it on my site.

Step by step doing the right things is indeed the best way to persist. But always thinking about "what next" may cost lots of time, dreaming away from your goal.

What helps me a lot is to plan everything I want to do during the year. So last week I calculated the time I have available. Then I determined how many pages I want to write, how many ezines, how many directory articles and so on.

In the second place I did keyword research for everything and used the Google Keyword Tool to know the right time in the year those keywords are most asked for.

Next I determined the topics to write about fitting the keywords. Of course I planned time for the technical things and adversities that occur.

Results: I don't need to think about this any more so I can start right away with the task that shows up. It costs some time to make such a plan but it will save time in the long term.

I hope this will contribute a bit to all who are struggling with that big, overwhelming "things to do list".

Warm regards,
Marjolein Brokke

Great article. I just Twittered it! :)
I recognise my own 'constipation' in spending lots of time reading other people advice but getting stuck.. information overload can be dibilitating.. you sometimes just need a kick up the bum (metaphorically speaking of course) to get you moving again.. or maybe some diital senna!

Hi Allan

I have been a reader of your articles, off and on, for some time now. I used to read them because I found them interesting and had hopes that someday I would get into an online business. Dec '08 I decided to take the plunge and got into an online program that will require lots of marketing. Now I read your articles because I need all the help I can get.

I liked your example of increasing a business .25 cents a day. It gives me hope. You can bet that I'll be devouring every article in this series as it comes out. Thanks for sharing your expertise.

A grateful reader

Hi Allan,
Just after writing down my goal for making $3000 per month from my website, I got your great article in my email box. I think that God has answered my prayer. I already am using SBI to run my site, which is a great start. However, every once a while I have doubts and moments of frustration. Your article gives me a great deal of hope. I bookmarked it and am going to use it to remind me of small things I could do every day to improve my site.

Thanks a lot,

Very inspirational article. This is great advice to start the New Year. Thanks!

Great article! Even if you take 2 steps forward and then 1 back, you're still going to make progress. I like the idea of improving your business in small increments.

Thanks for sharing!

Dear Allan, your newsletter, as always, is inspirational. I would like your permission to translate it into Indonesian language. Off course it will contain link to your original website for those Indonesian who can read and understand English. It will be for free. My intention is to help them broaden their horizon, and get more traffic to my site ;-).

Thank you before hand for your consideration.

Dani Sadikin

[Thanks for asking. I'm sorry. No. I'm not giving away translation rights to the newsletter as easily as that. This is a business with several employees who have to be paid, so I have to make careful business decisions. However, you can write about the concepts discussed. You don't need my permission to do that. Allan.]

Great article as usual Allan. A few comments.

Using John Audette and the rare market of 1996 where he prospered is perhaps not the ideal source of inspiration for this series.

It would be great if some of those who are reading this series might report their results so we can follow their progress. In the spirit of this series, small continually improving profits by average folks are more interesting than millionaires.

I hope readers will carefully follow this series as it unfolds. Taking action everyday isn't enough. We have to take action on the right things. It's entirely possible to work very diligently for months or years, and come up with nothing, if we're working hard on the wrong things.

Allan is poised to tell us what to work on. Listen carefully to what he says, and THEN take daily action.

[Joanna and I had lunch with John Audette in Hawaii in 2000 at a conference where John and I were speakers. He's inspired me ever since. That's the main reason I mentioned him. Yes, you can definitely work hard doing the wrong things. However, many readers already know what they should be doing, but aren't doing it. I'm aiming this series at both types of readers. I'd love to see progress reports. Great idea! Allan.]

This article reminds me a bit about the "double a penny each day for 30 days = over $1,000,00". That kind of thinking has always amazed and inspires me to pursue the "incremental improvement" ideal (I admit I'm not very good at it - yet :)

However, the biggest distraction is the almost non-stop launches of these various affiliate products (of which probably 1% have content that's actually worthwhile). Guess how many "Niche Blueprint" emails I've received over the last couple days - it's ridiculous.

I just wish more of these so-called gurus would follow Allan's format and write "review" articles once or twice a week and send them out in more of a digest (newsletter) format.

Allan, I thought your 25 cents a day improvement plan was a great hook for inspiring action, well done there. I especially liked the way you totally spelled out the math day by day, so literally no one would be left behind. The old special ed teacher in me nods approvingly. :-)

There's a lot of emphasis on "taking action" these days in web biz tutorials, as there should be.

This ongoing "take action!" emphasis throughout the industry points to the fact that the normal teaching methods common in the industry are NOT reaching most students, and NOT inspiring them to take action. A friend with a popular membership site tells me 95% of his members are paying, but not taking action on his methods.

When a teaching method doesn't work over and over again, it's time to try something else. Here's a suggestion to that end, in the spirit of your article.

Take action.

Take the action you're suggesting we readers take.

Build a new site from scratch yourself, and improve it day by day.

Give us your own progress reports as your new project develops. Tell us how much the site is making, and let us watch you build the total, month by month. And of course, include all the tips you have planned for the article series, in the context of a real site, as you make it.

Try to put yourself in the same shoes your readers are walking in, as much as possible.

Don't use your money, employees, connections or other sites to assist this project. Install Wordpress or SBI, and build your new site from scratch, day by day, page by page, link by link, all by yourself, just like we would.

The point of your quite promising article series seems to be that if we read along, and actually take action on what you tell us, we will succeed.

Good idea, great intentions, well said as always, but...

Don't just tell us. Everybody and their brother is already telling us. The information is already widely available, including on this site. If anything, we have too much information. Information isn't working. Something else is needed.

So, my 25 cents is...

Take action. Do it. With us.

Imho, what the industry really needs, the niche competitors are ignoring, is teachers who study teaching with the same focus, determination and passion we students are supposed to be applying to our study of net biz.

As always, thanks for listening.

[Hi Phil, Good ideas, as always. The timing is bad for me, though. It's summer holidays time in the Southern Hemisphere and instead of working more, I'm more motivated to work less and spend more time with family and friends. I'm sure you'll understand that. Allan.]

I have been one of the silly ones who bought many books telling me I'm going to have my own private jet within a year or so :-) Silly me but I'm so happy now at long last to come across an article that's genuine. I am new to this so my earnings to date are only around the $3 a day mark and I was starting to get very down beat about all of this considering I have a substantial amount of content on my site and working on links (fairly new so I know it takes time).

Now I realize it's all about time and what you put in is what you get out. I will certainly do a bit every day from now on.

Thanks again for restoring my faith

I would have to agree with "Declan"! I am very new to the Business too and have yet to make the 1st sale, but that is only a matter of time. I have had some lessons with an instructor and have gotten down a few times but I am on my way. The bottom line is that, "Time, Patience and Perseverance will accomplish all things"! I have the time and have always had the patience and am learning the perseverance, but what about the "Nervous System"!!??

I think anyone getting into the Business had better be ready for this; from what I read above I have company!

Let's all hang in there!

Great info! There are so many great nuggets in there.

Ironically, I came across this post in the course of doing exactly what you suggested -- trying to do little things each day to improve my business. In this case, I'm making a practice of involving myself more in top blogs and forums.

I've set aside an hour a day to read and comment on some of the best IM blogs. Not only do I get exposed to others' great ideas, but I've always found in the past that being more active among other IMers tends to lead to good things for my business.

Reading this post has paid benefits for me already!

Actually it's hard to improve daily habits but it's a must. So, I agree with your articles.

Anyway:

Take Action Right Now!

I just found your site through other blog. And I really found it's worthed to stick here and learn a lot about affiliate marketing. Hopefully, I can follow your tutorials.
