1. The art of site leveraging
=============================

By Mike Tempel of Oasis by Design

AssociatePrograms.com is one of the best sites available on the Internet for those wishing to make extra money or begin building future wealth. It lists almost all of the sites that are available to fulfill money earning arrangements.

For me it is one of my most valuable tools and saves me lots of time and money.

Here's how to get the most out of these programs, at least from my standpoint. I figure there are two types of sites that join associate programs: big sites that do well due to their high level of traffic, and small specific sites that do well due to the high interest in their content but could do much better with more traffic.

Here is the secret to making those little sites ten times more effective than one big site.

First you want to find a program that works. What is the point of promoting something that doesn't sell or even worse doesn't pay! I have had both situations happen, although have since found ways to fight the sites that don?t pay.

My criteria to see if a program works is three weeks or 1,000 hits. I then do an audit to decide if it works better than other programs I have listed. If it does I focus it on it for one week. If it doesn't I put more effort into the ones I already have that do better.

There is no better feeling than setting up a program and seeing it really take off so don't be afraid to stray from any you are working on now to test a little.

The idea is to find something that is measurable so you can tell when your efforts are working. When something works put all your effort into it for about a week. I will warn you that sometimes there is a delayed reaction and you won't notice a change for about one week. Usually I notice something I did on the first of one month really take effect on the first of the next month.

OK, so say you had great results! Now it is time to make money . . . lots of it! To simply state the best course of action: DUPLICATE. You have found something that works, now duplicate it over and over again just changing the page title, region, or sometimes even the market.

Be sure to first seek out all possible linking strategies in one area before working on another. This does not mean hit every free links page in the world. Rather focus on specialized directories and top search engines and link trading.

When I find something that works, I usually try to make at least one new "site" per day on the subject. To clarify "site", I simply mean an entry page to your opportunity that looks like a new site in your category. If you do this for one year you will have the leverage of 360 "sites" all producing around 30 + hits a day . . . that is 10,800 hits total for one day to a program that has brought in money in the testing phase all in a site that is specific to its topic, so the 10,800 hits are targeted as well!

If you did everything right that can create about $100 a day, $3000 a month, $3600 a year. It is simply the power of leverage, which actually is the secret of any successful business on and off the Net.

It is a lot of work, but once it is set up properly it takes care of itself with very little work. Just do the same with something else that is a good moneymaker!

[UPDATE 2011: Website traffic generation techniques have advanced enormously since this was written. Another way to get a truly comprehensive education in Internet marketing and affiliate marketing is to get SBI. You'll learn how to research a profitable niche, build your website, and market it. Included are web hosting and a private forum where SBI users and coaches share tips and help each other. I give SBI to my assistants and highly recommend it.]

2. Generous 40% commission
==========================

Russell Brown of The Business Book Press has just won the 1998 Excellence in Web Site Marketing Award from the Connecticut Better Business Bureau. Russ offers an attractive 40% commission in his associate program. How can he compete on price and still pay that much?

His answer: "I'm the publisher and author of the two books I'm listing. The bookstores get 40%, why not a web merchant?"

(UPDATE: Russ is not taking on more associates until he has improved his associate program.)

3. 40 Sign-ups in one day
=========================

Hi Allan

Two days after you put the Electronic Newsstand info up, I got a CALL from Tom Palmer, a major player over there asking if AssociatePrograms.com was my site. I kindly told him "I wish it was," but you came up with the idea first. Well, he told me he had 40 people sign up for the affiliate program THAT DAY and he offered me a FREE subscription to any magazine I wanted 'cause I told the world about them. Pretty cool, eh...

Stay Cool,
Angela

4. Tracking click-throughs to artuframe
=======================================

Hi Allan

I got a call from ArtUFrame today . . . They created a special website for me just for that single link out of your website so they could track it separately.

Best Regards,

Phillip Heyden
The Galleria Mall
http://thegalleria.net/

I asked Phillip if he would send me a monthly report on the click-throughs to ArtUFrame from AssociatePrograms.com (ArtUFrame uses the BFAST tracking system, using a one-pixel gif.)

Here's the first report: ArtUFrame was listed in the Associate Programs Directory on May 8. According to ArtUFrame's tracking, the listing was seen by 326 people that day, and 4.3% of them clicked on the link. There was a fascinating plunge the next day - I presume that's when I shifted the listing from the main page to http://www.associateprograms.com/search/new/

For the three weeks ArtUFrame was listed in May it was seen by 894 people, 61 of whom visited the ArtUFrame site. ArtUFrame says "a few" became affiliates. No one bought anything.

The lack of sales is hardly surprising. People who visit the Associate Programs Directory aren't looking for art to frame. They're looking for associate programs to join.

5. WHAT SIGN-UPS/SALES ARE GENERATED BY YOUR LISTING?

If you have submitted listings to the Associate Programs Directory, you'll be curious to know what results you're achieving from the free listing. How about contacting the companies involved and asking them if they will track those results separately? If a new URL or ID number is needed, just let me know. (Note: this is also a way of checking that the link is working properly and you *are* being credited with those referrals.)

====================================
6. Associate programs forum up again
====================================

I'm sorry it took so long to get the message board working again.

The friendly tech guy who installed it for me runs an ISP which has merged with another ISP, and which has taken over the customers of a collapsed ISP. He's now trying to cope with thousands of clients without going crazy.

Please post questions and good advice again on the Associate Programs Message Board

Thanks. Your messages will be seen by many more people than a glance at the posts would indicate. Only a small proportion of the people who visit the forum post messages.

[UPDATE: Our affiliate forum has been updated with all sorts of wonderful new features. It's a friendly, helpful place to visit.]

================================================
7. A message board that encourages return visits
================================================

Thinking of installing a forum on your site? I like the one at http://www.free-publicity.com/ because it automatically sends me e-mail when someone adds a comment to a message I've posted.

That's an excellent way of ensuring people keep returning to your site.

Because there are so many forums around now I suggest you find a niche that will make your forum useful for people interested in one specialist topic.

[UPDATE: That message board has disappeared.]

=======================
8. It pays to think big
=======================

Jeff Gates of http://www.bizcards4less.com has a problem which must be familiar to many companies running associate programs. He says that almost everyone who joins his program is operating from a free web site. "Therefore they will have very little luck making a program work successfully."

Some people hate me saying this, and there are brilliant exceptions, but as a general rule if you have a free web site you are handicapping yourself severely.

I believe it makes you look like an amateur to many people. Second, it's harder to get your site listed in search engines. (At the moment about half my traffic is coming from search engines.) However, I've been told that a lot of people DO make money using free sites.

I promise I won't say this in every newsletter: If you have a free web site and you join 10 associate programs and merely plonk all those banners on one page, you're going to find it very difficult to make money.

If you still have a free web site it's time to think big. Take the plunge and sign up with a reliable web host: http://www.virtualisys.com/

(That's the one I would try if I wasn't using one run by my nextdoor neighbor's son.)

[UPDATE: I Now use use friendly, helpful Rob Marlborough for my web hosting - http://www.AssociatePrograms.com/hosting ]

===========================
9. I'm just getting started
===========================

I've spent a couple of years studying successful Internet companies but I'm only just beginning to put into practice the things I've learnt.

Here's the progress I've made with attracting visitors to my new site http://www.AssociatePrograms.com set up late in March.

March: 43 unique visitors
April: 4227
May: 7013

Now, if I can maintain that percentage increase . . .

(Tracking by Extreme Tracking. I presume people who have graphics switched off aren't counted.)

[UPDATE: January, 1999: 21,366 unique visitors.]

=================================
10. Why newsletters are good news
=================================

A newsletter is a great way to remind people that your site exists (and subtly promote associate programs or whatever you are selling). This is only the third issue of Associate Programs Newsletter, but already a strong pattern is emerging.

When the May issue came out, unique visitors to http://www.AssociatePrograms.com rose to over 350 a day, stayed over 300 for three or four days, and gradually sank to about 200 a day. The April pattern was similar.

Like the web site, the newsletter is just getting started. The April edition went to about 400 people. This one two months later is going to 1278. I'm delighted with the percentage increase, but I've got a long way to go.

A remarkably easy, hassle-free way to publish a newsletter is to use the service I use, OakNet Publishing.

[UPDATE: OakNet was taken over by Advertising.com and wrecked. I now use Dundee.net. It's OK. For other newsletters, I use Aweber, which provides a superb, reliable service at a very modest price.]

For newsletter publishers, Angela Smith has started a very useful new newsletter called OurList About TheirList, "Your e-mail resource for newsletters and discussion lists". The first issue included an excellent article on how to publicize your e-zine and reviews of several newsletters. How to subscribe: send an email to
welcome-list AT ourlist.net

======================
11. How to get started
======================

I receive a lot of e-mail asking for advice on how to get started marketing an associate program.

Here's a quick summary of methods that are working for me:

a) Don't aim to make all your money from associate programs. Find or create or write a product or service to sell. (I sell two electronic books I've written and business logos created by a graphic artist). Use associate programs to enhance the usefulness of your site and fill unsold gaps. For a good analysis of what sales you can expect see this article: "Affiliate Sales: Direct Marketer's Heaven, Publisher's Purgatory" http://www.x-summary.com

b) Provide useful content or a useful service and people will visit your site and keep returning to it. Warning: a site crammed with content takes an awful lot of time to compile and maintain. Make sure you choose a topic in which you are vitally interested, so play and work are the same.

c) Write articles about the products or services you are promoting. A link in an article will have twice the success of a banner ad, says Forrester Research - and loads much faster. However, check the small print in the associate program contract. Some encourage you to add your say; some insist you just paste in some HTML code.

d) A different approach is to have a site containing a few gems which you update infrequently, giving you much, much more free time to actively promote the site and enjoy yourself making friends around the Net. Some days, I wish I'd chosen that route. You can promote your site in:

mailing lists
http://www.meer.net/johnl/e-zine-list/

forums
http://www.forumone.com

newsgroups
http://www.dejanews.com

writing articles
http://certificate.net/wwio/

e) Get a memorable domain name. Do you have to look in your bookmarks for www.AssociatePrograms.com ? I hope not - you're supposed to remember it. That's why it's plastered on every page of my site.

Choosing a domain name that reflects the business you're in and contains important keywords will improve your search engine rankings. For me, this works best with http://www.Infoseek.com . Today, http://www.AssociatePrograms.com ranked No.1 at InfoSeek for anyone searching for "associate programs". So choosing a domain name wisely could be the best investment you ever made.

f) Get your domain name now. It gets harder all the time to think up good names. For example, if you have a site about dogs, bad luck - http://www.dog.com , http://www.bowwow.com and even http://www.SitStay.com have already gone. Yes, http://www.AffiliatePrograms.com went ages ago.

And even http://www.bowwowwow.com has gone now!

Perhaps the brilliant name you've been toying with for a week or two will be grabbed by someone else if you don't act today.

g) Pay for marketing advice. Ouch! Sorry, but it makes sense. For example, I'm sure every piece of advice contained in Jim Daniels' book, "Insider Internet Marketing" is on the web - somewhere. But how many hours - or weeks - would you spend tracking down that information? Can you afford that time?

Jim's book costs $US23.95 and tells you the things he did right - and wrong - on his way to giving up his day job to be a full-time web marketer. I bought my copy last year and I still use it frequently as a handy reference. In fact, I still haven't worked through all the marketing methods he describes. It's an excellent introduction to marketing on the Net.

[UPDATE: No longer available.]

You should also buy Corey Rudl's Internet Marketing Course. At this stage, I'm supposed to tell you I've read it and how fantastic it is. A personal recommendation like that will pull about 400% better than a straight link.

Well, I've talked myself into it. I've just clicked on my own link and signed up for Corey's course. I'll review it in the next edition of the newsletter.

Corey's first success on the Net was his book "Car Secrets Revealed" http://www.carsecrets.com/ which became the number one best selling car book online (using the unique promotional techniques Corey teaches). It generated more than $US140,000 in net profit in nine months.

His four online businesses combined now generate more than $US2,000,000 in sales online a year.

You can buy Corey Rudl's marketing course now here.

h) Encourage other people to recommend your site. Recommendations which come from a third party are much more useful than ones you make yourself. The fastest way to make friends on the Net, I've found, is to do someone a favour. Praise a web site, point out an embarrassing typographical error or dead link, solve someone's problems, given them free publicity, help them make money . . .

I'm working on doing things like that. I find it fascinating how the approach works brilliantly with nice people and doesn't seem to make make the slightest impression on others.

i) As Zig Ziglar says, the way to be successful is to give people what they want. On the Net, they usually want free publicity for their site. Figure out ways to do that, and you'll make lots of good friends.

j) Help people make money - or lose weight, or win friends, or . . . whatever they want to do. My aim with the Associate Programs Directory is to give people publicity and help them make money. In return, they're supposed to be extremely grateful, giving my site free publicity, which will help them make more money . . . It's going to be interesting to see how well it works.

12. Cookies can cut your profits
================================

If you have joined an associate program which is using any form of cookie for tracking you are not getting referrals for a large number of your referrals, says Terry Van Horne of Webmaster T's World of Design http://www.tsworldofdesign.com

Many people are afraid to use cookies, he says. (Or perhaps they switched off cookies last year when there was a lot of fuss about them and just haven't thought to switch them on again.)

Terry says that in one program he recently moved up a level from a reseller to affiliate status and thus lost the "cookie factor".

The result: Sales doubled, downloads doubled, and verified visitors increased by more than 300%.

13. Gordon Currie is ill
========================

Gordon F. Currie, who was writing a series of articles for the Associate Programs Newsletter on producing traffic and income and building communities, is ill. I hope he's getting all the tender loving care he needs. Gordon's site Rivenguild.com attracts 13,000 visitors a day. If you want some ideas on how to attract visitors, it's a good site to study.

=======================
14. 101 Publicity ideas
=======================

Bob Elston has written a good article called "101 Steps to Increasing Web Traffic," at the Web Traffic Digest
http://www.trafficdigest.com

Bob's a bit heavy-handed in the way he promotes a book he is selling, but the article contains lots of useful ideas.

=============================
15. How Betsy and Bob succeed
=============================

According to http://www.webreference.com there are 1.5 million web sites and 350,000 million web pages. Here's one that has managed to stand out from the crowd:

The Kitchen Link
http://www.kitchenlink.com

Betsy and Bob have created a very useful site crammed with information and recipes. You'll need hours to explore it properly.

"We've been online a little over two years and currently entertain about 150,000 cooks a month and have about 10,000 subscribers to our newsletter (the newsletter is fairly new)," Betsy says.

"I created the site, do the layout and design and maintain all the information and my husband Bob does all the heavy duty programming (databases, message boards, search, cgi stuff, etc.) and hardware work.

"It is a labor of love for me. For over a year I worked a full-time job and worked on TKL in my 'spare time' (about 5-6 hours an early-morning/evening). Finally last November we took the plunge and I went full-time TKL.

"Now I'm spending 10-12 hours a day on the site. We spent about 9 months tied up by a publisher that had a plan that we were supposed to be a part of and they handled our advertising for that time (which meant we went with no advertisers for months - not even associate programs). Their project turned out to be 'vaporware' and they went in another direction and dropped us, so I needed to learn quickly how to fill our excess banner space while building up our food related advertising.

"I've been using associate/affiliate programs only since March and it's been trial and error as I learn what our visitors are most interested in. I'm careful to use only programs that are flexible and allow me to move banners in and out according to what's working - I'm also particular about banner content and what we're linking to. We're very satisfied with the results so far and expect the return to grow as I get better at co-ordinating the offers. I enjoy checking your daily listings and the forum -- it's helpful to hear about others' experiences."

By the way, I visited The Kitchen Link http://www.kitchenlink.com after Betsy offered me some useful advice about my site.

=======================================
16. Beautiful design leads to bookstore
=======================================

Michelangelo Buonarroti's http://www.michelangelo.com/buonarroti.html is a beautifully designed and fascinating site using one associate program, an Amazon.com bookstore. The site gets an average of 600 to 675 unique visitors a day, says Neil Bonner, who created the site.

As well as selling books, it's an interesting way of attracting attention to Neil's company, Michelangelo.com, "a leading web design and production company" just outside Washington, DC. "Our focus is innovative website design and on-line branding," he says.

Visitors can't miss seeing the Michelangelo bookstore, but many of them are students, "therefore we have not generated as many sales as we would have expected given the number of daily visitors," Neil says. "However, our expectations were not to make a lot of money with the bookstore. We are a professional web development company, so its purpose was more to demonstrate our skills and capabilities."

Neil says the company is very happy with its association with Amazon.com. "They are certainly visionaries in my opinion. We are planning on launching several more sites that offer good information as well as an online bookstore."

Take a look and be impressed:
http://www.michelangelo.com/buonarroti.html

===========================
17. Finding web site themes
===========================

Still wondering what to write about on your site? One way to get ideas is to study the questions people ask in mailing lists such as I-Sales HelpDesk or LinkExchange Digest. [UPDATE: Sadly, both gone now.]

For example, questions have been asked about shopping carts and so a shopping cart directory has been set up. Same with processing credits cards.

A popular niche directory lists Australian charities: http://www.auscharity.org . It averages more than 900 "hits" a day. Has a directory like that been done in your country or your region?

Recently I saw Rick Bier of rbier AT cyberhighway.net announce that he was writing an article for a series about link strategy for web sites and appealing for information on tools that help manage and/or automate the following tasks: track, and/or test links, (inbound and outbound), test/verify reciprocal links, detect and report broken links, find and list links in Infoseek and AltaVista, etc.

Sounds a great idea, Rick. I wonder how long it be before those pages develop into a full blown busy site?

=================================
18. Drafting associate agreements
=================================

Geoffrey Gussis writes:

Dear Allan,

I have enjoyed your AssociatePrograms site immensely, and thought I would share a resource with you that I just put on the Internet. Version 1.0 of "Drafting Vendor-Oriented Affiliate Agreements" went online today, and you can link to it from http://www.digidem.com/legal/. It is in rough form, and many areas need fleshing out, but I thought I would throw it online as a resource anyway. It will be updated again at the end of the summer.

I hope that you have a chance to read it and to make comments on it if you have time. Also, please use the Recommend-It feature if you know of other companies or individuals that might be interested.

Cheers,

19. Advertisements top and bottom
=================================

If there are advertisements at the top and bottom of this newsletter, I didn't select them. They are added by OaknetPublishing, which does a brilliant job of taking all the hassles out of distributing this newsletter.

[UPDATE: Oaknet was bought by Advertising.com and wrecked.]

20. Free web site evaluations
=============================

Got a web site? Wonder how it stacks up? Wally Bock will take a look at your site and give you a free quick web site evaluation. Send email to qsite AT bockinfo.com . Include your URL and the keywords you expect people to use when searching for you.

Wally is the author of "Net Income: cut costs, boost profits and enhance operations online", and publisher of Briefing Memo and the Monday Memo.

http://www.bockinfo.com

I tried his free evaluation and found it fairly basic but useful - mainly because he pointed out things I knew I'd got wrong but had been too busy to fix. I've taken some of his advice but not all of it yet, so don't blame Wally if there are things wrong with www.AssociatePrograms.com .

===========================
21. Why didn't you sign up?
===========================

I'm curious. I advise people to go to One & Only Internet Personals because it has an excellent program paying 20% commission, it's easy to set up and it offers a continuing income. As well as that, it can add interesting content to your site.

But only about 3% of the people I send there from www.AssociatePrograms.com join the program.

Mike Curtis, marketing manager of One & Only Internet Personals, says it now has about 16,000 associates, putting it neck and neck with CDnow. He seems quite content with a 3% sign-up rate.

But I'm curious. What were you hoping for and didn't find? A 20% commission rate and the opportunity for continuing income seems mighty attractive to me. And they're helpful, friendly people to deal with.

Why not take another look?

[UPDATE: OneAndOnly eventually closed.]

==========================================================
22. Win free banner advertising . . . It's now even easier
==========================================================

In his free evaluation of www.AssociatePrograms.com Wally Bock says that a site like mine ought to have 500 links pointing to it. So that's my goal for this month.

To encourage you to add a link, I've made it even easier.

You could win free banner advertising on http://www.AssociatePrograms.com for a WHOLE YEAR.

No, you don't have to post my banner. Just post the following link ANYWHERE on your site. (Of course I would like it prominently on your main page or a high-traffic page, but how generous you are is entirely up to you.)

<B><A HREF="http://www.AssociatePrograms.com/">Associate Programs Directory</A></B><BR> You can earn commissions by referring customers to other web sites. This directory gives you hundreds of programs to choose from.
<BR>

Tell me the URL of the page where you posted the link . . . and you will go in the monthly draw for a chance to win free banner advertising for a WHOLE YEAR!

If you win, your banner will go on the AssociatePrograms.com site. It won't be hidden away. There will be a permanent "Lucky Winners" link from the main page. As well, winners will be announced in this newsletter.

Remember: that link can go anywhere and you can rewrite it anyway you like - just as long as you include the words "Associate Programs Directory". However, if I can't find the link I'll draw another name.

Yes, I'll leave your names in the hat, month after month, so you get lots of chances to win.

Remember to tell me the URL where you posted the link.

Have you already given http://www.AssociatePrograms.com a link and you're not sure if you're entered in the draw for free banner advertising? That's OK. Just send me a quick note telling me the page where you posted the link.

[UPDATE: This offer has closed.]

24. Why I started the anti-cancer gift shop
===========================================

Anti-Cancer Gift Shop
AssociatePrograms.com/anti-cancer.html
Millions of books, thousands of CDs, hundreds of magazines.
All commissions earned help cancer patients

My brother in-law Larry came to stay with us for a few days the week he died. That was two years ago, but it feels as though it was last week.

My wife Joanna and I have a very quiet, peaceful spot here among the palms, jacarandas and gum trees, looking out over a little bay which is so private it's like having our own beach most of the time. Larry spent a lot of the time just sitting out on our deck and kept remarking on how much he enjoyed the view.

He was very brave but also a silly macho bloke, putting up with an enormous amount of pain, and insisting that he didn't need anything more than medication he was using. Joanna knew better and managed to talk him into going with her to a doctor and asking for stronger painkillers. When they started working it was almost funny - he was all smiles and embarrassingly grateful.

Larry was also considerate of others. He knew he was going and didn't want to put us through the "nuisance" of having someone die in our house. He timed it well. He died only two days after leaving here.

A man at the newspaper where I work part-time died not long ago of stomach cancer and at least two other colleagues are battling cancer. Friends of ours have died of cancer. The list goes on . . .

The Queensland Cancer Fund says one in three Queenslanders can expect to be affected by some form of cancer during their lifetime.

Oh, and I have coeliac/celiac disease (it's all right, it's not contagious), and coeliacs are more likely to get cancer than other people.

Is it a personal crusade? I wouldn't exactly call it that. It's more a lazy man's way of trying to do something useful. And who knows? If a cure is discovered maybe it will save *my* life one day.

I've reached the age where I think it's about time I put something back into the community. In the Challenge for Cancer - which raised about $1 million last year - people do things such as sell raffle tickets, organise fundraising morning teas and hold fashion parades. I thought I'd aim a bit bigger than that. It will be interesting to see how it goes.

The Anti-Cancer Gift Shop sells 2.5 million books, many thousands of CDs and more than 750 magazines. I'm not asking you for a donation. To help cancer patients, all you have to do is buy a book, CD or magazine - at discount prices. ALL commissions earned will be donated to Queensland Cancer Fund and full details will be printed in the Associate Programs Newsletter.

Now, there must be a marketing book, or perhaps a CD you have been planning to buy? Maybe a gift for someone? A magazine subscription? Please buy it *now* at a discount price at the Anti-Cancer Gift Shop and give yourself a warm glow inside because you know you're doing something good. Thank you.

P.S. If you would like to give the Anti-Cancer Gift Shop a link, you're wonderful.

You can have a warm glow inside for that one, too.

Please let me know when you've posted the link. I'll give you a reciprocal link on a brand new page I'll set up: Friends of Anti-Cancer Gift Shop.

Please visit:

[UPDATE: Unfortunately, I became so swamped with coping with AssociatePrograms.com that I quickly had to give up the Anti-Cancer Gift Shop.]
