Here’s the inside story on Paul Myers’ intriguing new affiliate program.

First, a quick note just in case there’s someone who DOESN’T read Paul’s newsletter…
Paul is a marketing trail blazer who does things his own way. He’s a blunt, funny, outspoken innovator who hates spam, has little time for fools, and loves testing and tracking. Without hype, he achieves astounding conversion rates.
He hardly ever joins the big, showy marketing launches. For 12 years, he’s been publishing a REAL newsletter that contains solid advice, clear insights and tutorials written in a delightfully original style.
He has a way of writing that talks straight to you. He gives away a LOT.
Joanna and I met Paul at a seminar years ago and ever since have regarded him as a friend. I imagine thousands of his readers do, too. He’s that kind of guy.

A couple of weeks ago, Paul the trail blazer launched an affiliate program for his newsletter.
His subject line: “This ought to shake things up a bit…”
So true.
Here’s how his new affiliate program works…
You send people to his site to get a free subscription to TalkBiz News and a copy of his free 112-page ebook, “Need to Know.” (It’s thought-provoking, strategic stuff. He tells you the things you REALLY need to know to succeed online. Things like leverage. He gives you clarity. He could have sold this for $100 or more.) Your referrals get the book and the content that goes with the newsletter, and you get paid every time they buy anything from Paul through his newsletter. For as long as they stay subscribed.
You also get to see the whole experiment from the inside. Paul reveals more of his stats than any other marketer I know. (More about his stats later.)
He says he began the affiliate program for a number of reasons.
“The biggest is that I’ve been taking it easy for so long. I finally decided to poke my head up and see what’s going on again. Get back into the game, as it were.”
Another reason is the hope that this will encourage more of the people who put out quality content to think about a similar program.
“This could start to create some attention for the folks who run real newsletters, rather than just ad lists.
“I also wanted to prove to new folks in the business that you can still generate interest and get significant results without glitz and fancy technology.”

“There are some tricks to it,” he says. “I’ll tell the active affiliates what those are, along with the results of other tests and approaches.”

“It doesn’t get much simpler than that,” Paul says. “Anyone could create those pages. Still, the confirmation rate has been rock steady at between 82% and 86%, which doesn’t suck.
“So far, the best converting promotion is one I wrote and let the affiliate edit. He sent 1,058 visitors in the first 40 hours, of which 755 subscribed and 619 confirmed so far. That’s 58.6% of the people who hit the page signing up AND confirming the subscription.
“For me, it’s a no-brainer.”
He says the affiliate program adds about 10 minutes work for each issue but, other than that, he just does what he always does – create solid content and include useful offers.
“The subscribers get the book … That’s 112 pages of very serious stuff for free. And it’s not the usual thing you see in IM books, so they take notice. Plus, I’m giving them a few unadvertised freebies of similar quality after they sign up. Mostly on how to do my favorite thing, after writing: ‘Sell more stuff.’
“For the affiliates, especially those with their own lists, it’s an easy sell. ‘Here. Go get this killer book for free, and you’ll also get the guy’s newsletter. Here’s what I like about the book.’
“Done. After that, I do all the work, and they get a chunk of the profits, usually around 50% on each offer, for as long as that person stays subscribed to the newsletter. I’ve still got subscribers from 12 years ago, so that could be a nice residual boost for very little work.
“It’s also handy for folks with unproductive banner ad space, unused or underperforming space on ‘Thank you’ pages after a sale or list subscription, a plug in the tail end of an e-course, low-yield AdSense code on blogs… Lots of opportunities out there.”
Affiliates also get a rebrandable report, 42 pages long, on developing an effective online sales process. They get to put their affiliate IDs in it and give it away or use it as a bonus with a product. (That’s another give-away product which is so good it could have been sold by itself, too.)
Their subscribers or customers will get the right to distribute the report, unchanged. So, it has the potential to
keep bringing in additional sales for them, and more subscribers with their ID attached.
“I’ve got more tools like that in the works, too,” Paul told me.
“I see it as an everyone wins proposition. The subscribers love the content. The affiliates get a fair cut of a potential long-term revenue stream. I get to reach more people and, one hopes, sell more stuff.
“It’s transparent. Everyone knows what’s going on, and they all get what they want.
“And, of course, I’m creating a product in the process. Complete, email-by-email, detail-by-detail documentation and explanation of the process, and how to make it work. I’m sharing a lot of that information with the affiliates as I go, so they can use it in their niches.
“So far, it’s working very nicely for everyone. I’ve gone slowly with it, so that I can emulate something like what a new person with fewer resources or connections could do. Still, it’s bringing in a VERY healthy number of new subscribers already. And I haven’t told the new readers about it yet. When I do that, it should start to take off.”
